I thought i'd share some info on my motor....its a VW beetle freshly installed with a 13b 88 UK spec motor. Now ive got it running well in the car, and ive done a 14.3 sec 1/4 on 165mm wide road tyres.....i wanna go faster.
I have a dellorto 48DHLA sidedraft carb to fit, but since buying it i have been considering the turbo route. Turbo 2 motors over here are big cash so this is why i am considering the NA/turbo conversion.
My question is one of reliability and if anyone had turbo'd a carb motor? Any info would be excellent guys!

Steve

A carb setup as a draw through is going to hurt your reliability simply because you cant run an intercooler in a draw through setup. The fuel having to pass through the compressor also hurts spool time. It can be done but it is generaly considered a quick and dirty way of turbo-ing. Blow through is trickier though due to the fact that the carb has to be sealed (throttle shafts, bowl vent etc.) and tuned to work over a wide span of pressures instead of just ambient. A wide band 02 sensor/gauge is just about an absolute must have since tuning will require some trial and error. Dells have been used in alot of blow through applications including a lot of air cooled VWs check out the "forced induction" section of www.shoptalforums.com it's all VW motors but there are a few people that know turbo dell prep

Any reason you don't want to go EFI? like megasquirt. http://www.twminduction.com/ThrottleBody/ThrottleBody-FR.html
Hope that helps.

Nice conversion! I have a friend who wants a Beetle and I've basically told her that I will help with any body and mechanical work as long as the choice of engine is mine to make.

Anyway, I don't personally have a lot of experience with turbo carburetors but it certainly can be done and I believe that I have seen that exact carb run under boost before. It's going to be twitchy to tune and you will obviously need to lock timing at some conservative value.

cool......well if ya need any advice on motor gimmie a shout. Do you do msn?
