Im about ready to start ripping my 87 apart to a turbo on....already have the turbo, manifold, spacer and downpipe, all the oil lines and tubing, but have a question about the water lines. This turbo conversion came off another car on which the water lines weren't even hooked up as i have been told... now am i wrong in thinking the water is necessary for keeping the turbo cool? will it run reliably without water hookups? the turbo is a stock S4. I've found aftermarket turbos that don't cycle coolant through them, so does this one need them? If i have to hook them up, what kind of fittings should i use? right now there are just the threaded holes in the turbo housing, and the mazda dealership couldn't find the lines in their system... any help would be appreciated, need to get my project done. oh, another question, will the racingbeat downpipe need to be modified to compensate for the manifold spacer? im guessing it'll just need rewelded back in a couple inches but im wondering if there are other complications.

I Would definatly recomend running the water lines to the turbo. I didn't on mine, the bearings in my turbo are now quite dead, however I think this was more to do with the fact the wastegate line fell off and the turbo boosted to some silly Psi.

The stock turbo is both oil and water cooled. Turbos come in oil cooled only, or both water and oil cooled. I would not use a turbo designed for water cooling without the water as it will probably wear prematurely due to coaking on the bearings.

As for fittings, the easiest thing to do would be to modify the stock banjo bolt fitting. The lines ARE available from Mazda, but may take some hunting to find (and a parts person who knows what their doing). I just cut off the flanges and used a hose clamp to secure my hose to the pipe. A better design would be to use AN fittings in place of the banjo bolts. They should fit as long as you match up the size. Then you are free to use whatever hose you want.

As for the downpipe, it is doubtfull that it will fit. I have not been able to fit a downpipe designed for a stock turbo setup on my car due to interference from the firewall.
