 Causes for low boost?

I am coming up to a 5psi (on autometer gauge) barrier in gears where I get decent boost (3 and up). Spools at 2500rpm and hits 5psi at about 4200ish rpm and it stays there till redline. I have looked up the subject on rx7club.com, and have come up with eihter:
a) turbo going bad/turbo problems
b) low compression
c) faulty wastegate/wastegate not completely closed
d) ic piping leak
e) also on first drive with all SAFC settings at 0 I was able to hit 7ish psi (first drive from exhaust shop) but then backfired and my muffler blew open from it (1.5cm ish gash along length of muffler) so I dunno if this would be a restriction or not.
f) running too rich, i was told this could lower boost also.

I'm in the process of checking these, hopefully does anyone else have ideas as to why I'm not making decent boost?

Also my setup is:
s4 turbo and manifold
550's on all 4 injectors
walbro fuel pump
s4 fmic
and racing beat cat elimination pipe with stock cat back
SAFC settings running what Aaron suggested in my previous post.

The pill is in the line that leads from the compressor output of the turbo, along the compressor, and to the wastegate actuator. I forget which side though....You can put a paper clip on the line to keep it shut, then drive CAREFULLY and find out if you now have full boost.

for the pill in the wastegateline I replaced the line closest to the dashpot (I think thats what its called) and left the one closest to the turbo as it was. Do you know which vac line holds the pill?

Well, you really need to properly tune that S-AFC via a dyno and wideband...

However, to eliminate exhaust problems related to the mufflers, remove the exhaust system after your downpipe and give it a try. Be careful as you don't want to overboost, and wear earplugs. If you get proper boost now, then that is your problem.

As for your turbo, bad turbos are easy to spot. Weird noises and smoke are the first indicator.

Also, did you run your own wastegate hose? Unless there is a restriction (pill or boost controller) in the wastegate line, then the wastegate will be too sensitive.
