OK. So I've now gone back from Win7 to XP, because it suits me better. I now have Win7 on drive0 and XP on drive1. I'm all set except for transferring my email messages.

There doesn't appear to be an export facility on Mozilla Thunderbird, so can anyone tell me how to copy my messages from Mozilla in Win7 to Outlook Express in XP?

You cannot export messages from Thunderbird to Outlook or Outlook Express directly.

Just copy all the message folders from within your profile as instructed here:

I've now installed Thunderbird on XP, but I can only import from Outlook or Outlook Express on the same drive. It seems there is no way I can move messages folder from one drive to another without copying them. There are dozens of files in various folders. Which ones do I copy?

In XP, can I get them from Thunderbird to OE? Or must I use Thunderbird from then on?

You can't.

Install Thunderbird in XP and then move the messages folder to the new installation.
