I am using XP SP3 and a USB HD for backup. Backup is with Allway Sync, configured to backup changes as soon as I plug in the USB HD.

It fails every time because Autoplay searches for file types and Allway comes up with the message that it could not procede because the drive was not ready.

How can I stop Autoplay?

Hmm...Then have fun editing the registry:

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

To disable Autorun yourself on operating systems that do not include Gpedit.msc, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following entry in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutorun
Right-click NoDriveTypeAutoRun, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 0xFF to disable all types of drives. Or, to selectively disable specific drives, use a different value as described in the "How to selectively disable specific Autorun features" section.
Click OK, and then exit Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.

Thanks, I tried WINKEY+R and it got the Open box OK. But I've only got XP Home and, as you thought, the displayed message says it cannot find GPEDIT.MSC

Windows key + R gets you the run box. Then type GPEDIT.MSC. I think that's only valid for XP Pro though. Home doesn't have the Group Policy editor.

Thanks for the info, Aaron.

Allway Sync is a backup and restore program aimed primarily at people who want to bring files home from the office on a USB stick so they can work on them at home. The modified files are put back on the stick and the program can then update the office files. I am using it just for backing up files.

I have been using a small second fixed HD to keep a complete backup of my main disk. Initially I used Xxclone to copy the entire disk, followed by regularly updating the copy with Allway. That all went well until the second HD got almost full. Then I decided to get a 500G USB HD and the fun and games started.

I found if I left the USB drive plugged in at startup, then Windows in its wisdom(?) would decide the disk had a fault and required checking – every time! If I missed the warning and didn’t hit a key to stop it, Windows would proceed with the lengthy operation while I had to sit twiddling my thumbs.

So I had to leave it unplugged till I needed it. Allway has an option where the backup is delayed until the USB device is plugged in. So I used that. But when I plugged in, Autoplay came into action and went through the USB drive looking for programs to load. It didn’t matter whether I terminated that action or waited till it had finished - Allway would have tried to access the drive as soon as it was plugged in so gave out a message that the drive was busy. That meant backup had to manual instead of automatic – something I don’t like that because It can easily be forgetten.

Hence the need to get rid of Autoplay. I’ve read the instructions and downloaded the file, but that’s as far as I’ve got. It says to click Start>Run and then type Gpedit in the Open box. But I cannot find an Open Box. Still, every Microsoft message can usually be read a number of ways, so I’ll keep trying until I get the right one!

How does Allway Sync work? If it runs of of the drive, then disabling Autoplay will also stop it.

That said, I always turn off autoplay/autorun because it is a massive security hole. Here's how:
