I have been experimenting with website hosting from a dedicated server for a few days, with success. XAMPP was a bitch, IIS on Win7 was nice and easy.

Due to my lack of knowledge in this area I would like experienced input on common questions a newbie like me would ask.

1) What OS would you recommend?
2) What HTTP website hosting program would you recommend?

The reason why I ask is because I want to avoid running into problems down the track, if and when I decide to upgrade the server's and website's capabilities.

I intend to use mySQL at some point and at the moment I have no idea how I would connect it to my website.

This is all just an experiment. Nothing serious.

Thanks.

As you can see from my website, it's just the standard Apache web page. I don't have the time to do anything fancy at this time.

What do you plan to do with your website?

I live near both Vancouvers (B.C and Washington state), and have heard nothing about it.

Am I the only one who has noticed that the guy in the "kissing couple" seems to have his hand in a rather interesting location on that girl? It may be just a trick of the angle but I've looked closely and it sure does appear like I think it does. So who in the hell would be doing that at that particular time?! Meh, come to think of it I've done far worse in odder situations so whatever...still not news though!

The Vancouver riot disgusts me. Bunch of degenerates.

All the Netgear hardware that I have has died within 2 to 3 years since purchased. I am using a Linksys modem and two routers - a D-Link and a SPIRIT cheapy. The D-Link appears to be sensitive to humidity as it crashes when the humidity rises.

The pictures that I posted of the self-screwed Netgear router and modem can be found in their appropriate directories:

I was lucky, my Netgear is lasting for now. Some days it will work great and be fast. Other times, it will be drag-ass slow or not work at all. I have a new router. But I've been lazy the last few days (in reality it's been about 3 weeks ;-) ).

This is a very interesting thread. I must admit that I am also a newbie and due to this I think the thread is very interesting. I already compared different web hosts (e.g.: http://www.ixwebhosting.com/ ) but I am not quite sure which one I should choose. Any recommendations regarding a web hosting company.

Everytime laundry is hung up beside my servers I always wonder what the humidity is doing.

Thanks for the recommendations Aaron. I think the days of my router are numbered. As soon as the humidity raises in the room it crashes.

Be very careful about running a public FTP server that anyone can upload to. I guarantee that very soon it will be filled with pr0n and warez. Additionally, if someone can upload something, they may be a little mean and upload a file which can infect your system by being just previewed.

Back in the day used to have an anonymous FTP account set up that allowed uploads but not downloads. It was hilarious the stuff that collected and it must have infuriated the people trying to download it.

Consumer level routers suck, it's just that simple. I've been cleaning out the shop and literally sent a stack of dead consumer routers to e-waste. They last a year or two and then become unstable.

If you want a nice router, then the Netopia R910 is a great way to go if you can find one. Failing that, the Cisco RV042 (which even supports dual WAN).

I had already used Ubuntu desktop in the past, so I just gave the server version a go and stuck with it. Never felt the need to try anything else.

Adrian (codingplanet), did you consider using Debian Linux for your server? If so, why did you choose to use Ubuntu Linux Server instead?

So with this swaped-in DLink router I still have problems - it crashes. Turns out the poor thing doesn't like humidity. I had some clothes drying over a heating duct in the room where the Modem and Router are. Once the drying had stoped and the humidity went down, the Router stopped crashing. Well, these types of equipment are, in a professional setup, stored in a well air conditioned, low humidity environment. I doubt the heat was the cause because the room temperature was around 22C, and that's well within range of all consumer computer products operating specifications. Still, very interesting.
