It's Christmas Day today. 
I am using Windows 7 on almost all of the computers in the house and I am using a feature called Sync Center between my laptop and my desktop. Sync Center only allows syncronization over the LAN but not over the WAN. I'm looking for the most easiest and proven way to sync files & folders when my laptop has access to my LAN, if no LAN connectivity can be found then it should just go through the WAN (internet).
I have done some research already but I would like some recommendations.

Oh yeah I found one. This one does LAN and Internet. If I accidentily left my homework on my desktop while i'm at Uni, I can sync over the internet. |

The way I do it is to use Offline Files and Folders (XP...). Sync Center does the same thing in Win7/Vista. Then over the Internet, a VPN connection is used between the tablet and the server. Of course, the server runs NT and has PPTP connected. For desktops, something like Hamachi would be more appropriate. It is still a clunky solution and uses a lot of bandwidth but I find myself rarely syncing remotely.
One of the "cloud" based services (Windows Live, Dropbox, Amazon) would be best for smaller files and constant syncs over the Internet but I don't know if they have options for LAN only local sync...I doubt it though. |

I don't think there is one solution to your problem unfortunately. Looks like you'll need one solution to sync via LAN, and another, remote server style sync/backup.
I can give you a folder on the server that his hidden from HTTP if you like. Although upload is only ~70kb/s, it should be enough for small files. |

No I need something that will work through my LAN as well. Most of the time I will be syncing files over my LAN (large amounts of data), and only small amounts through the internet if needed (try to avoid). |

Hey, if I understand what you're trying to do, I think you would need to sync to a remote server. I know of a piece of software called Dropbox that maybe useful. Although I've not looked at it myself, I have a feeling it will do the job. |
