Hi i have a bs 3.5 HP engine just like Aarons on his go kart. I just started building a go kart and i was thinking to clean the motor a little. I took it all apart and then i put it back together but when i started it and pushed the throttle up the engine would chock. I think the problem could be the wheel in the crankshaft that moves the valves up and down is not set right. or maybe the carb? Whats the easy way to set the wheel that moves the valves? And also if there is something else i should try let me know thx

It's been a while since I opened one up, and it varies by engine...But basically, there should be a dimple on the cam gear that gets lined up with a dimple on the crank gear. If no dimple on the crank, then it gets lined up with the keyway...

Probably a good idea to head to a small engine shop and pick up the Briggs and Stratton shop manual. Only about $20, but has all this info, and lots of other good stuff.

Ok i reopen the crancase and i look on the crank Do i line up the holes on the camshaft with the ones on the crankcase cover? also there is a biger hole on the camshaft and there is a little punch. do i need to put the piston up then mount the camshaft with the big hole up? thats the only way the holes align.

OK, let's get a few things straight....

The B+S engines don't have adjustable timing. So that's not an issue.

If you took the cam out and put it back in wrong, the engine probably wouldn't run. HOWEVER, if it was just barely off, you can see these symptoms. You need to open the crankcase and veryify that the timing mark on the cam is lined up with the one on the crank.

After that, make sure there are no leaks between the carb and engine...Any vacuum leaking there will cause problems.

Did you take your carb apart? If so, then that's your problem. Any adjustment of the mixture screws will totally screw things up. There are factory procedures for carb disassemble, reassembly and adjustment. Follow them.

I don't know how much a lawnmower shop woud charge.

I woud just keep ajusting it untill you get it right. In the end, when the magnets on the flywheel are aligned with the magneto, bolth valves shoud be closed, then half a rev later, the exauhst shoud open, then another half turn, the exauhaust shoud close as the intake opens.

Yea i opened the crankcase.:( now how do i adjust it. I tried to do it by eye but the exaust valve only opens once and the next turn it doesn't open.(the exaust only opens once when the intake opens twice.) Do u think a shop would charge alot to adjust it.

Did you open the crankcase? If you did, youll have to reajust it or, more preferrably, take it to an engine shop.

If not, try ajusting the fuel mixture screw on the carb, be carefull tho, don't want to blow the head gasket.
