Yeah, definitly sounds like a bad clutch.

Maybe it was just the type clutch i used in it, sometimes the engine would just suddenly stop when i stopped moving. Thats what gave me the idea of it being jammed. There was also lots of smoke comming from the clutch at one stage, maybe you're right, thier probably is something broken in it.

This doesn't make a lot of sense. If the clutch is jamming, then there is something seriously wrong with the clutch. Broken springs, or worn guides (that hold the shoes in place, assuming an centrifugal clutch). The flywheel stores very little energy, and if you let of the throttle, the engine should brake easily (especially if you cut the ignition).

Centrifugal clutches should not overheat during use. If they do, then the clutch is slipping and should be serviced (or maybe it is being subjected to too much torque?).

I have a go kart, and just so you know its maybe best to run the kart off a electric motor. Because if you want to go at high speed with only a engine, the cluth might get jamed. It happend to me in the park, what happens is the fly wheel in the engine has lots of energy at high speed and it will not slow down for a greet distance. And if you need to brake suddenly and the clutch gets jamed you will not stop. To aviod this, power the electric motor by the engine or get a really reliable clutch. Or just dont go fast!

Much of this has been covered before. Please try a search for "kart".

Short answer:

Vertical shaft engine = no

Wood frame = yes

thanks. could you use a verticle shaft lawn mower engine. would a belt to strong enough to power a wooden go-kart.

Um, if you're putting a generator on a go-kart to run an electric motor, why not just power the kart directly via the gas engine? Much more efficient...

Also, furnace motors are normally fairly large at 3/4 HP or so. You'll need quite a large generator to provide the necessary startup current...

well, It depends on the generator. If it can put out the wattage that the motor needs then, yes.

I don't quite understand what you are asking.
