I have a 27 HP yarmar diesel engine with an altinator generating 80 ams dc current, but i also want to generate 120 volts ac. Can i use an electric motor being driven by way of pullys do the job?

Hi,
The Yanmar is a 'marinised' engine, typically used
on boats of one type or another.
It is likely that its principal use is drive a
boat, and the owner probably has some mains items
he would like to run also.
This may be why he/she mentions pulleys by way of
a power-take-off, since the usual way for an engine
driving a large alternator is direct.
The owner also mentions that this engine has an
alternator capable of 80 Amps.
My guess is that this is a 12 volt peripheral and
not the principal use of the engine, 80 Amps is
a little high for most 12 volt alternators, but
there are heavy duty ones for diesel engines.
Running a small generator from pulleys wouldn't be
too difficult, but aiming at 50 Hz would be very
awkward on a boat, manouevering often means
changing from low to high revs.
Since SHEHERB has faded away, we are not likely
to find out one way or another.

A UPS would be a good intermediate to use while you fire up the generator, but it cannot provide the constant high power he wants to use the generator for...Actually, come to think of it, you could hook up a generator in parallel with a UPS battery and make a good emergency power system out of it...Cool, maybe I will do this.

I doubt that you will check back,
its been a couple of months now,
but i thought i would chip in anyway.
I think your best bet for this
would be a UPS unit.

Yep. Motors will run in reverse to generate....Not sure the best type to use, but a search on "Google" for "home brew generator" or the like should turn up what you need.
