Hi Aaron….

I have a boat that I can steer electronically: if A is logic high, it swings to port; if B is high, it goes to starboard. I want to hold a steady heading. Can I use an angular rate sensor (gyroscope) or some other device somehow to provide the logic to hold a steady heading (a heading holder)? All servo systems work fine. Any help on this topic would be most appreciated…

An angular rate gyro cannot hold a heading. Effectively you will be integrating the angular rate to get your heading, however a phenomena called "gyro drift" will occur inside the gyro and this will through off your heading measurements. Not to mention the math precision errors that will also build up over time. What you need is a solid state magnetic compass module, but you can also use a gyro alongside the compass to improve heading responsiveness if you are good at programming algorithms.
