Posted - Mar 24 2010 : 1:46:18 PM Hi, im using a 36v/650w permanent magnet motor to drive my electric skateboard. only problem i have is slowing down. i was reading on dynamic braking ... it seems like putting a resistor in the armature circuit would work out? what's size of resistor should i choose ?

Posted - Mar 28 2010 : 10:19:35 AM You need a low value resistor, and the value of resistor requires changes as the output of the generator changes, which of course is dependant on speed.
One thing to keep in mind is that in an arrangement like this, all the braking energy is burned up in the resistor and coils of the motor as heat. You'll need a high wattage resistor (at least 100W) on a big heat sink.
Try 5 Ohm to start and see how abrupt the braking is. Note that braking will taper off as the speed decreases.
