With the blackout in the northeast from Hurricane Sandy, I needed to set up my boiler at home to run during the power outage to provide heat for my home and that of my in-laws. In both cases I used a deep cycle marine battery feeding an inverter and disconnected the normal 120 vac feed to the boiler and tied into the 120 vac coming from the inverter. I then charge the battery with a small 1200 watt generator every 24 hours. I think the inverter uses a lot of power just to make the 120 vac. The 120 vac boiler feed is only used to power a 120/24 VAC transformer that is needed to open the solenoid valve on the natural gas line and open the zone valves. I would rather use a 12 battery and convert directly to 24 vac and bypass the 120/24 vac transformer and eliminate the 12/120 inverter.
Is there a simple way to convert the 12 vdc to 24 vac so that I can eliminate the inverter?

Nice surprise about this shorter form. Can you tell us what it is you are talking/writing about?
Has any info. about this shorter form been posted before (and i just missed it)?

Why not install a 12V solenoid in parallel with the 24VAC one?

But yes, it's fairly easy to make 24VAC from 12V. You just need a 1:2 transformer and then an oscillator to drive it. A 12V solenoid would be easier and cheaper.
