Posted - Aug 21 2006 : 09:42:48 AM It was an eventful weekend.
Late Friday night my mailserver came under a dictionary style spam attack. Thousands of zombie computers attempted to relay mail to random @aaroncake.net email addresses. Unfortunately for the spammers I am the only one that uses the mailserver and there are only about 10 accounts, so it's a waste of their time. More unfortunately for me, the load overwhelms the server and keeps crashing it. I've been restarting the service all weekend but it only survives for a few minutes at a time. No idea when this is going to end so until then forum email functions are dead.
Saturday afternoon around 3PM, the power went out at my place. I was in Toronto at the time so I did not find out until I was paged. The UPS lasted for about 1.5 hours, though the outage continued on for another 2.5 hours so everything had to be shut down. Things were back up around 5PM on Saturday.
Sunday evening all kinds of weirdness occurred which ultimately took the website offline for several hours. This was due to some changes I made to the server Sunday morning. After applying those changes correctly, the site was back up before 8PM.
