When working with electronics, you always need one basic thing; power. This power supply is great for powering all kinds of electronic projects. It produces a well filtered, variable 1.2-30 volts at 5 amps. It is easy to build and the parts are realitively easy to find.

This is a schematic of the Power Supply

Notes

  1. The regulator comes in a TO-3 case and MUST be used with a LARGE heatsink. You may want to mount a small fan to blow air across the regulator (I did).
  2. The filter capacitor is large. It won't fit on any board so bolt it to the case.
  3. You can, of course, add a volt and amp meter.
  4. Since this project operates from 120 VAC, you must include a fuse and build the project in a case.
  5. R2 may need to be decreased to 120 Ohm if you experience voltage drift at light loads. 240 Ohm may not load the output appropriately on some regulators. The datasheet for the LM338K does specify 120 Ohm (I suggest you use a 1/2W unit) so you may just want to use 120 Ohm and not bother with the 240 Ohm resistor showin the parts list. This has been discussed on the forum.

Hello again. I commented on this LM338K-based power supply. back in 2008 when I built a dual version for my G-Scale Model Railroad. It's still working great with no problems! It's great circuit. It's very stable and easily puts out 5 amps at up to 30 volts. The amperage has been checked with a DC clamp meter and suitable dummy load. Thanks again. I really like your website here, too. Regards.

Hello, I've never wired up anything, but as a working tattoo artist, have run across the need to. What I am looking to build is a power supply with a 3 way toggle that could run 3 separate tattoo machines, one at a time. Preferably 0-18v @ 2a. Could someone please help me come up with a parts list and wiring diagram for something like this? It would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

R2 gets super hot, and the pot get in fire. These 2 resistors are connected from the positive to the negative rails, WHY? It burns the resistor across the rails. I am sure this circuit diagram is right, as I saw it from many difference places, but why the pot burned? I am sure I have a right setup.

More a curiosity question than anything. The LM338 schematic shows an input voltage of greater than 28V while you have a transformer outputting 24v spec'd out. (assuming 120Vac input) ?

I have a couple 13.8 vdc power supplies that were used for ham radio; I'd like to build an aux. project box to use as a 1.2 to 12 vdc, 5A Variable Power Supply. If I include everything to the right of the bridge rectifier in the above circuit, am I on the right track? ... Thank you very much for your reply!

Hi Aarron What pin on the 2n3005 is the IN, OUT and ADJ. The data sheet for the 2n3055 does not give this kind of info. Am I to assume that the IN is the Collector, the OUT is the emitter, and the ADJ is the base. I have tried to wire this up but it is not working. I may have burn something up or have it wired up wrong. Thanks Mike

Nice but based on fairly costly linear regulator. With variable output power supplies it's important to easily get the output regulated voltage that you need at any particular time. My thoughts on this is either: 1) Permanently hook up a cheap digi multimeter so that setting the output is easy & accurate, or 2) Building in a panel digi voltmeter. I'd prefer this but do not have access to a low cost design. Can anyone help here

Looking to build a power supply for a foam hot wire cutter, wire will be 12 to 36 inchs long depending on project. Would this power supply work for this? I would like to have 24 v and anywhere from 5 to 10 amps, so that is what caught my attention to this power supply. Thanks Great site.

Nonsence. This will not supply 5 amps with a Voltage differential from input to output of 30 Volts. At 30 Volts between input and output and 5 amps out you will be dissipation 150 Watts in the device and it will go into shutdown. It can only supply one amp when Voltage between input and output is 30 Volts. See data sheet page three at bottom. Sorry about that

(Editor's notes: Not true. I've used this very supply for years. No issues dumping 5A into a 24V battery.)

Hello. I appreciate your posting this design. A couple of years ago, I needed a power supply for my "G" Scale model railroad. 5 amps was more than sufficient. Since I don't havve electronic controls on my RR, I use blocks which implies that I would need at least two power packs. The model shop wanted about $400 for a dual setup so I decided to buld my own. I built two of the power supplies into one case. I used some ceramic heat sinks for the LM338K units and so far, they have not even seemed to get warm so I don't uise a fan. I just cut several 2" holes in the case and covered them with wire mesh to ventilate the units. That did the trick. The two supplies were built into a metal electrical box that is 12 X 8 X 4. I added a panel voltmeter and ammeter on eqch side with two large knobs for contorlling the 5K pots..I also have a fixed 12 VDC tap with a switch and a red LED on each side and on the fixed voltage switch to show when the power is on. The only issue that I ran into was the lower voltage. With 1.2 VDC on the minimum setting, the locomotives would tend do crawl when the power was turned on. I cured this with some large ceramic resistors across the outputs in each supply to lower the voltage to zero. They are outside of the case in the back. It's crude but it works and they hardly get warm. The units have bene working flawlessly ever since I finished it. Thanks again!

I presume few have an electrical background in here! Therefore, hints I share for the general public: I strongly recommend RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH!For the transformer questions: Study amp-turns ratios and their properties, they're approximately proportional, however the current rating will be affected! Parallel and series? Parallel circuits all receive the same voltage, however each component, if containing resistance will contain a different current draw! Summing up for the total current in a parallel circuit would be adding each route's current back to the primary source! However, total resistance in a parallel circuit will be less than that of the smallest resistor...Strange, huh? Series? Different of that of the parallel circuits, each component containing resistance will receive a different amount of voltage (electromotive force), however, the current draw will be the same for each one since there is only one path for the power to be driven across!

I must go for now...See what you can look up on Ohm's Law, it helps a lot!

Ok... legitimate question, unlike all the others you have recieved... I am in the process of building this power supply. What is going to happen if i short circuit the output leads? Will it continue to supply full amperage and just heat up the wires/components? or will it instantly destroy my LM338 regulator? Also, can i run 2 LM338's in parallel to supply 10 amps? (assuming my transformer will supply 10A), Thanks!

Using a transformer closer in voltage to your output voltage would help your heat problem with the regulator. 3 to 5 V above the desired output on C1 would be good. i.e. if you want 5VDC then 8 to 10VDC should be supplied by the transformer/bridge/capacitor circuit. You should still use a heatsink but a fan will not be necessary ... Hope this helps!

I have a power supply and I need to be able to reproduce it, the only problem I have is I don't know what type of transformer it is, I'm thinking it's a rectifier transformer. The power supply has the following; 1 transformer (unknown, has 2 lugs for primary input 120v, w/ a resistor across the lugs, has 3 lugs secondary output) 2 capacitors 5000 mfd 50 vdc 2 fuse holders w/ 4amp fuses 1 bridge recitfier gbpc2504 this power supply produces 32v + and 32v - and a common for both of these voltage outputs.

6v DC to Power a 12v Fan
Wednesday, May 23, 2007 4:03:31 AM
Can someone help me on this, I'm not good with electronics and I was just trying to build a cooler for my game system, and I used a 6v power supply to power a 12v Fan.....it worked for about 15min. and then died, I found out it was the power supply that died and it was pretty hot but the fan was ok, did this happen because I used the wrong power source or it is somthing else? any answer would be appreciated thanks!!

(Editor's notes: Use a 6V fan.)

Hi i got a question for you. Ok first I'm a Tattoo Artist And all my Tattoo Machines Can run up to 12 Volt. I got a 12 volt 500 M/A Power supply. My problem is I want a varable to change the output Voltage To beable to decrease the voltage for different speeds Some where from 6 Volts Up to the normal output 12 volts 500 M/A. Iv tryed running a 500 ohm pot between the two positives but it burns the pot up, I also try a few other different wiring with the pot it burn up every time. If you could give some addvice it would be greatly appreciated!

(Editor's notes: Look up PWM motor controllers.)

Power Supply 24 Volts
Monday, April 30, 2007 9:10:15 PM
Sir, I need a 24 volt DC power supply to feed my 24 volt PWM DC motor speed control which is rated for 15 amps, but I only need the power supply to supply a regulated 24 volts at 5 amps. The LM338K would do fine. I will be building a total of 15 of them to control my 15 G scale trains. I have a Buck Boost 12/24 volt transformer rated for 62.3 amps at 24 volts AC which is more than I will need and each train will pull a maximum of 1 to 3 amps. In your schematic you show very large input capacitors and I would think that a single 10mf to 100mf for the input and a single output capacitor would be sufficient for my application being small DC motors. What are your thoughts? If you could email me a schematic with components and values I would appreciate it. Thank you Gary

It seems to be very easy to do such a power supply just like that. I'd really like to try one but I'm not familure with the components which have been used. However, most of the components (trade number/technical number or name) were not clearly shown. That makes it more dificult to me to find out how to use it searching for the data sheet. For example, "LM338K" can be found easily, but the rest of the components were not. I'd like to ask you please help me due to this issue. Can you please send me the data sheet for each component?
