Have you ever wanted to run a TV, stereo or other appliance while on the road or camping? Well, this inverter should solve that problem. It takes 12 VDC and steps it up to 120 VAC. The wattage depends on which tansistors you use for Q1 and Q2, as well as how "big" a transformer you use for T1. The inverter can be constructed to supply anywhere from 1 to 1000 (1 KW) watts. i have made this circuit and its good. i have been updating some component to make it more good.. this is what i have to share.. If your making your own transformer for this project with the output of 230v or 240v... first you have to wind the secondary windings which is the 230v or 240v output. after you finish the first windings. take a secondary windings which is the output transistor is connected... okay this is the explaination why the 220v first. lets take first the input side of the transformer... to make the transistor will take not overload due to resistance. the transprmer will have to wind more to build additional resistance from the copper wire. due to this effeciency will take 80%-89% for the whole power has been transmitted to the other side of the transforme. | ||

All you need to get 220 is two of them. bridge the neutral and have the two hots plugged to either side of your main breaker. | ||

Hi all I Have a working inverter from this exact design it works well for 110-130vac, I used a MOT and rewound it as described with a centre tap. What I would like to know now is how can I increase the output voltage, I live in Australia and we have 240vac mains... I have tried everything I can think of I have wound up and down the number of turns on my MOT with only a very slight variance in voltage, I have tried to change the resistor values and that has changed nothing ... Car batteries are made for heavy discharge, but not for sustained discharge. You need AGM or deep cycle. Trojan 105 would work. They are 6V each, but a pair of them will out perform any 12v battery. | ||

The first part of two transistors are use to generate a pulses.This is known as astable vibrator. Use only a center tapped transformer and keep positive as constant in middle one.The the inverting input of negative charge is applied alternatively for other two ends. When diode is connected reversely in transformer to avoid the back emf to damage the transistor like a relay. If you want to change the frequency means simply change the value of the capacitor. Diodes D1 and D2 will always be reverse biased due to the fact that their N-ends are sitting at the +12V which is the highest voltage in the primary circuit. This means that no current will pass through R1 and R2, and you won't get any voltage drop across them. Have you tried this circuit or is the alignment of the diodes in the schematic a typo? Also is the waveform produced a sinusoid or a square wave? Thank you | ||

this circuit is a short cut, suitable for driving amplifier, and a light load like mobile chargers, cfl's, etc. for a party or picnic. i would not advise anyone to extract more than 1KVA at the most because this circuit is basically an astable multivibrator and has no: 1. frequency check, 2. overload protection, 3. battery cut, 4. battery charger and will have a rather very poor performance!! cheers. | ||

This is a "classic" circuit that has floated all over the Internet. It is amazing that no one has made corrections. If you build it "as is", while it will show an "AC" voltage at the output of your transformer, there are numerous problems. First of all, the shown connection between the center tap and the rest of the circuit should be opened and the CT connected only to the 12 volt + lead. This will reduce idle current from about 2 amps to less than a half amp. It will also allow the proper voltage to appear at the transformer output instead of a reduced voltage (as one reader reported above). Next, all resistors should be increased in wattage ratings to at least 10 watts, preferably 20, for cooler operation. Finally, the timing capacitors should be increased in value to around 100 uF and should be BiPolar. The simplest way to acheive this is to use 2, 220 uF electrolytics in series connected at their minus ends with plus ends connected at the circuit points. One other improvement would be to add choke/cap filters to the "AC" output or, at least, a small value (.05 or so) high voltage cap across the output to reduce transient spikes and harmonics. | ||
Ok, so I saw that the Q1 and Q2 and T1 (the transistors and Transformer) are what determine the # of watts, but would I need to make the other components such as the diodes, capacitors, etc. be larger as well or can they be any size as long as the Transformer and Transistors are good enough to handle the wattage? Error in circuit causing C1 and C2 heating up. Reverse the C1 and C2 will solve it . Capacitors can be used any kind of electrolytics type. Makr sure to connect the positive of C1 to Collector of Q1 and do the same for C2. | ||

Hi, I'm trying to make something like a portable soldering iron and was wondering if it were possible to make an inverter that can run off of a battery pack or small lead acid battery. This would only require about 10 to 15 watts due to its size. For me this is just something to do, a project of sorts, although I don't have any experience building circuits. I know most of them are probably from school kids, but really they should still be able to read around the subject, do a bit of research, read your own comments as to the limitations of the circuits, and post appropriately.
Particularly amusing are all the ones that think you're sitting waiting there to instantly design something for them and magic it back to them, or who want you to explain things to them from scratch.
If it were me I'd get rid of most of the comments and, if you want to entertain the kids, enhance the explanations.

FIXES FOR THIS CIRCUIT::::: Yes this circuit works fine but ther are some problems The HEP 154 Silicon Diode; since no one cannot find this component, a good replacement would be 1N4001 Silicon Rectifier Diode And... the 68 uf, 25 V Tantalum Cap is the correct rating, But in this circuit it shows them backwards. so you would need to switch them around. Also.. for the 2N3055 NPN Transistor if you dont know What is E, B, C, look up its Data sheet ( Collector is the case)( im using 2N3055G, its not different but its cheap and easy to find) | ||

I have simulated the circuit on Tina and it does work. It works well enough for me.
However, is there someone who could tell me why the capacitors don´t charge and discharge at the same time? The circuit is perfectly symmetrical!

This power inverter was the most worthless thing that I have ever built. Whoever made the schematics on this had NO idea what they were doing. Many things over heated, such as the transistors. The hertz were too high to power anything. So i ended up making my own power inverter that WORKs unlike this worthless piece. Make sure next time before you post something on the internet that it honestly works. Guys, seriously... Don't keep posting here with simple questions. Just search your local library for books on electronic circuits. It has worked for me for years. P.S. Stop getting frustrated and swearing. Electronics is just a bunch of simple concepts connected in different ways (not hard to understand), seeing as I am only a 14 year old kid. Keep up diligent work and you will figure stuff out (guaranteed). | ||
R1 and R2 heats easily. Based on the circuit, when d1 or d2 conducts the voltage across R1 or R2 is about 11.3 volts which is beyond its maximum voltage based on the formula P=(V*V) / R. When P=5 watts, R=10 ohms, the maximum calculated voltage across R1 or R2 is 7.07 volts. I think this is the reason why R1 and R2 heats easily. | ||

this inverter may be built on a demo board for showing off push-pull oscillators, but nothing more, if you want to run else than light bulbs. it has no stabilization, no protection, no output filter ans it's stability of amplitude and frequency is heavily relevant on the load. have fun with is, i have built several of these and experimented much, but it's a learning aid, not a workhorse. and generally the trafo exit for an inverter is a joke. get 12V/24V, step them up to 310 with DC/DC and then use a full IGBT/MOSFET bridge and a good filter. Monitor the voltage and use PWM sinusoidal modulation and you'll get A GOOD INVERTER! hahaha, sorry for the lashoff... | ||

I built this years ago as one of my first projects. To be honest with the price of inverters now it will be cheaper to buy one. I don't know whe "EDITOR:" is, but to say that it takes 100 Amps at 12 Volts on the input of a 120 Volt AC inverter to produce 100 Watts of output is absurd at best. To say such a thing not only violates Ohm's law, and Kirkoff's law, but the fundamental laws of thermodynamics as well! An input of 12 V at 100 A is 1,200 Watts! And, did you ever see a 100 Amp fuse in your car?
If that were true, the inverter would be 0.083 % efficient. In reality most inverters are 80% efficient or better. So, Mr Editor, I'd say check your math...

(Editor's notes: 100A at 12V is always 1200W. 10A at 120V is always 1200W. To make 10A at 120V from 12V requires 100A, assuming perfect efficiency. To make 10A at 240V from 12V requires 200A, assuming perfect efficiency. 10A at 240V is 2400W. 10A at 120V is 1200W. Therefore if you want 10A at 240V you need put in twice the current then you would have at 120V. Exactly the same way was my circuit that I used 36 years ago to substitute mechanical chopper/vibrator cartriges when they became obsolete, to power tube-type car radios. There was absoltuely no radio interference caused by this multivibrator circuit, despite of it's square-wave oszillation. This was a good money maker way back when. To get higher wattage output, one could also use a welding transformer and parallel several transistors. | ||

- Any transformers can be used as long as it's have Primary and Secondary spool, the output power (AC volt) depend on the transformers type, mean that using big ampere transformer on Secondary ( ussually to DC output between 6-48 volt ) u can get the big output to supply any AC (110/220) instruments. - Try to find unused electronics instruments, many of that type are found on old mainboard of computers. - U can used the same transistor type, I used ST products 2N3055 by paralized it for 4 pcs ( I dont mean to make Darlington mode ), and using above 10Amps transformer ( Secondary ) output. - ( ... ). - To protect the polarity of battery connector ( + and - ) u can add 4 high current diode ( paralized 5 diode ), I have try it, it's good even I make some charger built in with relay auto switcs. - Any currents transformers can be used, and you got the power as ur transformer can do.. | ||

To all of you i ´d like to give my opinion regarding this inverter circuit . It is not steady in terms of voltage nor frecuency ,couse it is an auto-oscilating inverter circuit, and changing load changes everything .(hz,volts,etc.) .The relation of turns of the transformer, is not exactly that of a 12 vac to 120 vac . transf . it must be calculated as an 8.5 to 120 vac for it to deliver all the power by receiving more voltage pressure on the 8.5 volts primary . we ´d better use some sort of oscilator ic. like the 555 to generate steady frecuency no matter what load . Now days with electronics and computers so advanced,there are many good great inverters & UPS around .Hope this helps . my regards : Sabino | ||

I live in Jamaica and we are plagued with power outages. I am interested in making my own ac backup system with car batteries. This will power my small fridge, 2 floor fans, 8 computers and 2 florescent lights for 12-24hrs of usage. What would you suggest regarding the following: 1. I have some problem with my inverter, the driver circuit has working, and there are output voltage 230 from secondary side of transformer, but if we insert a load( soldering iron 30 Watt) the output voltage get drop until 10 volt. this oscilator circuit used IC SG3524,to drive mosfet IRFZ44, how to make voltage regulation from this IC.and what the transformer type that used for inverter,how to make and calculation the transformer? thank's | ||

wheres is the snubber circuit across transistors ? you need output filtering too . you may use integrated circuits to generate the chopping pulses driving the bipolar transistor if you seek the accuracy. | ||

I TRIED YOUR INVERTER IT WORKED BUT THE CAPACITOR EXPLODE I TRIED TANTALUM CAPACITOR IT DIDNT WORK IT EXPLODE FINALY I TRIED TO PUT A REGULAR CAPACITOR 220 UF 200 V IT WORKED BUT THE CAPACITOR EXPLODE AFTER 2 HOURS. THIS INVERTER DOESNT MADE 300 WATTS IT JUST MADE 40 WATTS WITH THE TRANSISTOR 2N3055.SO I PUTT 2 OF 2N3055 ON EACH SIDE AND I GET 80 WATTS. SO YOU HAVE TO PUTT MORE EXPLANATION ON YOUR INVERTER BECAUSE IT IS EXTREMLY BAD AND IT DOESNT DO 300 WATTS. SO IF YOU WANT TO MAKE 300 WATTS YOU HAVE TO USE 14 TRANSISTOR 2N3055 ,7 ON EACH SIDE.
