Notes

  1. L1 and L2 are 5 turns of 28 AWG enamel coated magnet wire wound with a inside diameter of about 4mm. The inside of a ballpoint pen works well (the plastic tube that holds the ink). Remove the form after winding then install the coil on the circuit board, being careful not to bend it.
  2. C5 is used for tuning. This transmitter operates on the normal broadcast frequencies (88-108MHz).
  3. Q1 and Q2 can also be 2N3904 or something similar.
  4. You can use 1/4 W resistors mounted vertically instead of 1/8 W resistors.
  5. You may want to bypass the battery with a .01uf capacitor.
  6. An antenna may not be required for operation.
  7. A thanks goes out to Mike_Springer@iname.com for cleaning up the original image once displayed on the page. It looks a lot better now!

I builded that transmitter to that PCB layout seen on that page. That little transmitter is very unstable, it drift 89.100 to 89.329, 229khz in 5mins! And FM deviation iss very slow, only about 5khz. So after that I builded smaller versio of that using junk SMD parts and with little modifications. I get it stability to 50khz/5min and deviation to allmost 100khz.

The frequency is determined by the Coil/Capacitor combination. If the frequency is too low, spread the coil or rewind with one less turn, do the opposite if freq is too high. It does not matter if the coil buldges up from the board if you spread it. You also can use more or less capacitance to obtain your frequency.

The second inductor is for decoupling the antenna from the tuned circuit so that moving the antenna does not affect the frequency (a lot). No matter what you do to it this type of circuit will never be stable. Best way to transmit in FM now is to get a car FM modulator with audio input or a Belkin Tunecast and hack that up. With an amplifier using a single RF transistor it is easy to boost the output of those things to several watts. Be on the lookout for the car modulators with LED display and no fancy features, the ones with complex LCD displays tend to have whistling noise that you can't get rid of.

HEY WORKING REALLY GOOD...!! BUT HAS VERY SHORT RANGE... FOR THOSE WHO ARE HAVING PROBLEM ... REGARDING INDUCTOR: 1.BUY ENAMEL COATED MAGNETIC WIRE TO BUILD INDUCTOR. 2. CUT WIRE INTO TWO PIECES : 8cm EACH. REMOVE ENAMEL COATING FROM BOTH ENDS OF WIRES.& CHECK THE CONTINUITY 3. TAKE A PEN REFILL (LEXI,CELLO ,TECHNO TIP.ETC ) WHICH HAS OUTER DIAMETER OF 3.2mm approx. 4. WIND WIRE ON REFILL (5 TURNS). 5. DONT BEND WIRE WHILE WINDING, REGARDING CAPACITOR: 1. IF YOU DONT HAVE VAR. CAPACITOR THEN CONNECT ANY FIXED CAPACITOR (disk) BETWEEN RANGE OF 3-18pf. REGARDING ANTENNA: 1.YOU CAN CONNECT SIMPLE WIRE ALSO. REGARDING RECEIVER. 1, IT WORKS VERY..WELL WITH CELL PHONE RADIO RECEIVER DUE TO HIGH SELECTIVITY.( VERY CLEAR.) TUNE IT IN AUTOMATIC MODE. 2.WORKS VERY VERY POOR WITH TRAD. RADIO RECEIVERS. REGARDING TRANSISTOR: ...I USED 2N2222A . DRAWBACK: 1.SHORT RANGE. BEST SOLUTION: 1.BUY LESS TOLERENCE COMPONENTS. FOR MORE COVERAGE.. 1. PUT POWER AMPLIFIER BEFORE ANTENNA. (FOR POWER AMPL. .....SEARCH ON GOOGLE ).

I'm back. Works great. I haven't got it to go no more than 100ft or so. Not sure if its the antenna, longer? It works without the Variable Cap but can't tune it using a regular 5pf Cap. Got my iPod to play from it but its really hard to get a clear signal and it decreased the distance to like 3ft or so. I also used 30-22AWG wire and it still works. To increase the distance I believe one can build a special FM Amplifier but I haven't gotten to that yet. Its been fun and thank you for providing this circuit.

I'm fairly new to electronics and in trying to build this circuit I came across a few answers. You absolutely need an adjustable capacitor with the recommended value to tune your cicuit to the desired FM frequency. It is super sensitive so grab a radio and look for what frequency you are on. Also after the circuit has been on for a while the frequency changes when heat builds up so you have to keep adjusting it. I also found that putting a 10k and 4.7k resistor in series to the + terminal helped my electret mic(from Radioshack) pick up more sound. I'm sure you can use 26AWG or 30AWG. Best advice is get a breadboard and test every question you have. I am not finished with this circuit yet. I still have alot to learn. I'm sure you can hook up any output instead of a microphone but I will try it.

@ Chris Why don't you just learn some of that stuff at least the basics so you can read this. You don't need to know everything related to electronics to make this thing. The only thing you need to know is how to identify the pins of the transistor. that is the only thing that you cannot understand by looking at this diagram. Even then with the the a pc board diagram shown here You don't need to know anything about that. If you google everything you don't understand you would know how to build this in and hour or two. The lines are wires the symbols are different components and some have + - sides like batteries and some don't. You just have to figure out which end is fixed to which wire(basically what goes where) and solder them or use a thing called a breadboard where you just have to plug everything(no soldering). For your information this is a very easy transmitter to make. And if you seriously want to make this I'm sure you'll just Google everything and make one. if you are unsure make a small Led blinking circuit first to get a hang of everything. I repeat its not hard but you have to make an effort. Asking for a better diagram and better explanation for this circuit is like asking for a cab to pic you up near you bed so that you would't have to learn how to walk to the door.

i am going to try this. we can use a fixed capacitor (say 10pf) and we can alter the coil length to get the required frequency. Testing this circuit requires a lot of patience as u have to tune it to know the resulting frequency. I prefer u to use a phone with fm receiver. search for stations and u will probably know your frequency. Hope this will help u a lot. enjoy [:)]

sine: The capacitor needs to have approximately the same range (e.g., 2-20, 5-15, ...) to stay in the same frequency band. If you stray from this range, you'll need to compensate by changing L2. Chris: If you can't read a schematic, you don't want to attempt this project. Start with something a bit simpler to get your experience level up a bit. It's easy build a ckt that won't tune into the FM band if you're not careful with layout, etc. Vinod: The capacitor between C and E is to provide feedback to make the circuit oscillate.

This should work fine. Download "LT Spice IV" amd you'll see it works just fine. I built this 35yrs ago and as kids we had a lot of fun (in the UK, the police band was just above the commercial FM band and this circuit tubes there too!), THe circuit I built then had a POT accross the microphone to adjust adio sensitivity - that may be needed here. I also reacall the circuit is very temperamental even when your hand comes close it stops (or starts) working. Play with that and tweek the coils, you'll get it working. Tomorrow I will build this with my 12 yr old son.

I built this, and it worked on the breadboard, but when I put it onto PCB it didn't work. Turns out it's only oscillating up to ~50Mhz now, should be easily fixed by messing with cap values. Moral of the story is, if it's not working, check it on an oscilloscope and make sure it hits the right frequency range.

and i can make the antennae as long and tall as necessary and a custom receiver. i just need the signal to be heard clearly and reliably at the other end. I'm also not going to be in the standard radio range. i basically just need ways to make the components take more volts and then push that to the max then make up for whats left with antennae height. Thanks for your help. :)

What would it take to boost this thing to a range over 8,500 w/o burning out any components? i calculate 255 volts but that would certainly fry almost anything. i was looking for something to take and boost the outgoing FM signal instead but no luck so far.

I have built the transmitter carefully using maplin parts and the mic salavged out of a pocket pc, the coils I made were constructed from 30 SWG as Im from the uk and AWG is hard to find so 30 SWG was the closest I could muster. I used clear nail varnash to hold them together and it is currently on breadboard working a treat! voice modulation is very sensitive from across my lounge and I even tested it using CW (morse) and it worked perfectlly. However It seems battery voltage is critical in its oscillation and require 8.5+ voltage. All in all a fun project that works surprisinly well with a good range and penitration through walls.

The most stable analogue fm transmitter is using coupling coil transformer over ferite core, regulated volatage for the first stage and second stage and housing in metal case. Every stage also must be isolated using metal housing, like every person in their private small room. Crystal controlled FM transistor is also stable but hard to get intended value and builder must be good in calculating frequency doubler(multiplier). Multiplier is good to avoid output RF stage from being pickup by input stage(just like mic echo over own speaker).

The classic 'Mister Microphone' transmitter circuit! We've built this one many times as a 'quick and dirty' project that kills a couple of hours in the construction, and then provides many more hours of entertainment to keep the kids busy playing 'radio station', and out of the adults' hair. As others have noted, the circuit can be a bit "twitchy", and sensitive to touch and proximity while adjusting the tuning. I'd recommend a metal enclosure, such as an "altoids" mint tin, being carefult to insulate the connections from the enclosure. The value of the tuning capacitor is only somewhat critical - so long as you get something close, you can tweak the coils to adjust the tuning as well. We've even built versions with fixed caps for C5, and used nothing but mechanical adjustment of the coils to tune to a specific frequency. To those who insist on asking for detailed information, documents on transmitter theory, "do my homework!" requests, etc.: Google is your friend.

I was made a lots of this circuits in the past years. This circuit is some influenciable. You need a metal chasis to isolate it from external interferences if you want more stability under all environments. But it is stable if you adjust the coils and the variable capacitor and don't touch it anymore. You can enlarge or shrink the spiral separation in the coils. So, you will modify the operating frequency of the circuit. You don't need to touch the variable capacitor if you enlarge or shrink the spiral separations. Be patient because the operating frequency can easily vary only touching a component or enlarging/shrinking a little the coil. You must adjust the coil and latter try to tune the receiver. So doing that very times you can get a fixed operation frequency. And when you get that, you must fix the coils with some glue. The input voltage too influences in the operating frequency. Try to get a stable power source. When the 9V battery discharges the frequency down. Antenna: You need some 1/4 wavelength (75 cm) of wire. Any kind of wire can be an antenna (isolated or not isolated). If you need more coverage you must construct a decent antenna (search in google). Wire of coils: You can use some thelephony installation or UTP wire (0.6 mm diameter aprox.). Or same kind isolated or not but if it is not isolated you must do avoid spires touch the others.

FM Transmission Frequency - configurable?
Wednesday, July 11, 2007 5:26:11 PM
The schematic doesn't indicate any adjustable component. And this article makes no mention of it, so I assume this transmitter transmits over the range of 88-108MHz and is not configurable for a specific frequency within that range (unlike commercial FM transmitters for MP3 players)?

the circuit is very simple and a simpler circuilt would be dificult to produce and the use of such a device is illegal (in england at least) and if you had a devce with a range of 20km it would probably be confiscate by ofcom or FCC. what would be good would be to have a directional antena which would direct the radio waves in the direction you want them to go and less away from your reciever. googleing anntena design may help you the wave length is ~ 2 metres

I tried with a long wire but every time y touched, the frecuency change

I built an FM Transmitter almost identical to this one. It oscillates and I can hear myself on the radio but it is very hard to tune the variable cap because it ranges from 5.5-80pF. Miller's Theorem is a tricky son of gun and can make you go crazy if you dont know how to calculate these values. Miller's theorem basically tells you that there is an internal capacitance between the nodes of the transistor and you have to calculate them to take them into account. If I take it inot account, my variable cap would have a smaller range, like 2-10pF, and it would be easier to tune the frequency. Some advice would be to open a book or search the internet before you just start building something, there is no value in building something you know nothing about. Otherwise you might as well buy it. And trust me you dont need to be a genius to figure any of this out. Hope this helps the ones who are confused.

I made this FM transmitter ditto as given but it failed to work. Not even a bit. All I could hear in a FM receiver kept nearby was background noise, and some sound when i hit one of the capacitors or some other components. My teacher told me that it was due to keeping the components legs not touching the PCB and keeping the gaps shown in the fugure. She even suggested the use of some kind of op amp or some thing to boost the power of the circuit. Someone please help me to build a complete working model of such a FM transmitter. I don't want to loose out on quality to make the design simple and cheap.

I am just getting into "rolling my own" electronics for robotics. I like the easy to digest fomat of your instructionals. I have through self research, learned much about electronics but in the course of doing so would find a part of a concept impossible to understand which would sometimes keep me from understanding it's other dependent parts. I just started reading the article in "howstuffworks" and find they fill in the gaps whether it's a research paper of a schematic. Thanks! Oh and P.S- to those lazy readers who want people to send them copies of special designs to their Email addresses-- HIRE A CONSULTANT!

i think use of this ckt should be elaborated a bit in context with remote control toys. how fixed frequencies are transmitted by press of diff buttons. mic of no use there. plz reply

(Editor's notes: That would be an entirely different circuit, must more complicated. This transmitter is a simple transmitter used to transmit audio only.)
