Well I suppose everyone can relate to it.
As a matter of fact Sittin On Tha Toilet now. Not.

Well, have you ever heard of a website named 4chan.org? Well in the /b/ forum they probably spammed it at some point.

I remember someone once posted pr0n images directly onto this forum. They got deleted pretty quickly.
BTW, regarding your "Snooze -tube" thread:
That video was recorded about an hour's drive out of Melbourne (the populated areas).
The song's name is Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen Sehen ("Do you Want to See the Bed in Flames?"). Not my cup of tea IMO.

There are several questions which come to mind after seeing that video:
-How does it get to 40,000,000 views?
-What kind of idiot actually makes such a recording?
-What is the weight carrying capacity of a normal toilet. Based on this video, it's significant.
And was this seriously the first time you've heard of 4chan? The /b/ forum is basically anything goes.

Seriously! I have never heard of it before. Most of the stuff on that website seems to be pretty tame compared to the crazy shit I've seen on other websites; borderline illegal if you ask me. I don't visit those websites, I just know they exist.
My sister showed me the "Sittin On Tha Toilet" video and I was watching it with a confused face. 40,000,000 views? Seriously? WTF!
Edit:
One of Justin Beiber's songs on YT has 665,928,416 views?
Seriously? WTF!

Gotta figure that the Bieber song as so many views because people just sit there and hit "Play" over and over again. Or set the thing as their home page or something equally as stupid. Not really sure how the view counter works either. I think it increments even when someone doesn't watch it all the way through.

That's what happens. Even on Britney Spears's music videos I read comments of people watching, or at least pushing F5 over and over again to get the view-counts up. I can only imagine what would have happened if YT was around when BS's career started. Billions of views by now. Oops off topic.
I think the view-count increments on page refresh but I have seen counters go backwards so YT probably has countermeasures for view-count spammers. I often see the counter get stuck at 303 and then suddenly jump up to some high value, which I suppose is one of their countermeasures at work. They have to give accurate view-counts because advertisers want accurate numbers. I believe the video channel's owner can actually see the "unique" view-count which is probably just a sum of views from unique IPs.

It does as far as I know, but the channel owner can see where in the video people are leaving, which is quite interesting. The "attention curve" as I call it, starts off at some high value and then drops off as the video continues to play, or as people lose attention/interest. You've got your own channel Aaron, look up video statistics on one of your videos; they provide a lot of interesting and probably useful information.

I don't even know why a person would do that. What does it matter how many views a video gets? Besides, that's just going to show in YouTube Insight that 99% of views only watched the first 10 seconds.

I remember reading a few years ago about how YouTube works in the backend, and it explained the backwards counters. Turns out that the counters are not real time, and depending on which cache server you view from, the count may differ. It's only synced up at set times. According to Insight, the views correspond to a view of the page. Then there is further data available for how long people watched.

YouTube just changed their interface. I don't like it. There doesn't seem to be a way to generate any reports across a series of videos, only individually. That makes it fairly useless other than a curiosity for a person with 60+ videos.

Apparently it's because Britney fans want to get more views than Lady Gaga, like it's some kind of competition. I personally don't give a rat's arse.

Yes not too long ago my Gmail changed in appearance, and now YouTube. I like the new Gmail interface and I'm not fussed about the change. I haven't had enough time to explore YT yet.

They must have a shocking amount of time on their hands. Don't kids have hobbies these days? Though it is amusing that that Britney Spears needs cheap tricks to have more views than Gaga.

Now that Google has changed the AdSense interface, the widget which displays my AdSense data on my desktop doesn't work. The problem is that the author used a regular expression to extract the data, and I just don't know RegEx well enough to modify it. Plus I'm not willing to take the amount of drugs necessary to understand RegEx.

Actually I'm not so sure she does, well at least on YouTube? Both of their careers boomed 10 years apart. Britney's career started 7 years before YouTube, Gaga's Career started 3 years after YouTube. Of course if you tally up how many views Brit's videos have been seen on TV and wherever else, there would probably be no comparison really. I remember hearing Brit's songs and music videos playing in large shopping centers as far back as 13 years ago.
I still remember looking up at a CRT television in a shop and seeing this...

I think I prefer this kind of music over Lady Gaga any day.

Yeah, I know. Gaga and Bieber have the benefit of the existence of social media and YouTube. Gaga at least makes some very good videos. Bieber seems to be a master of taking advantage of YouTube to push his crap. Rather, I bet his publicist is more than anything. At least Gaga could have existed outside of YouTube. We can't say the same about Bieber.

It's funny you should mention Uranium, because I've been trying to get some Uranium ore for a while but United Nuclear has been sold out for months...And now that I just checked the site a minute ago, they are once again fully stocked with Uranium ore and other radioactive samples! Sweet! I'll be placing an order after the Christmas season for some ore, radioactive samples, and a few other random bits. It will be nice to be able to use the stuff in a small display with my vintage cold ware era Geiger counters.
Last night I dreamed I was playing a game show in a mall, nothing about Britney Spears nor Justin Bieber.
But I did have an unpleasant Bieber encounter this past summer. I was just leaving Stratford after picking up a PC at a local pharmacy that needed a Windows repair/reload. Waiting at the intersection of I believe Huron and Ontario to head out of town, I'm staring at a green light and unable to move because there's a crowd clogging the other side of the intersection. I'm thinking "What causes a crowd of 12 year olds?". Then I saw it: Justin Fucking Bieber. Apparently, crossing the street is such an extraordinary event for Justin Bieber that it causes every 12 year old girl in a 50KM radius to descent on the area and offer him encouragement.
That's OK though, because later in the summer Selena Gomez was playing at the JLC in London, which is right on my route home. As she was exiting her trailer to sign autographs I drove by slowly and yelled "Justin Bieber has a vagina!". About 30 prepubescent girls wanted to kill me.

If I were him I would consider those crazy and frantic 12 year-olds a major turn off, and that's probably a large percentage of his fan-base (young girls). Girls that looked more in-control of their emotions... now that would turn me on.
This event so reminds me of my primary school (elementary school) years. I had girls literally chasing me around the school yard. They wouldn't leave me alone! They kept jumping on my back and they wanted me to carry them. They were always asking me to 'draw' on there backs with my finger when we were sitting on the floor in the class room. When I stopped 'drawing' on their backs, they told me to keep going. Hehe! WTF!

That's an interesting auction. It seems to be a prospecting counter instead of the typical cold war era bunker counter. But the price is insane. For that price I'd expect it to be working, tested and calibrated.
I have a CD V777 radiation detection kit which consists of a CD V-700 Geiger counter and a CD V-715 ion chamber survey meter.
The CD V-700 (model 6B):
http://www.civildefensemuseum.com/cdmuseum2/radkits/cdv700.html
The CD V-715:
http://www.civildefensemuseum.com/cdmuseum2/radkits/cdv715.html
The ion chamber detector reads continuous and large gamma fields, so I have not been able to give mine a proper test with a radiation source. The internal check functions and tests according to the manual work, so I can assume that it functions properly. Hopefully I'll never have the opportunity to actually use it, and it will remain a curiosity.
The CD V-700 geiger counter works great, and is loads of fun. There is a small beta source on the side of the instrument for testing and with the beta shield open, it registers with the appropriate meter reading and the wonderful "tick tick tick tick" in the headphone. There are fewer gamma sources around, but every few seconds a stray particle hits the probe and it registers. Ionizing smoke detectors register quite well, my upstairs toilet is a fairly decent gamma source (about 3-5 counts per second), and there's a customer in a building downtown with granite walls that register at about 5-10 counts per second.

That never happened in my elementary school, but keep in mind, it was (well, still is) a Catholic school. So that kind of behaviour would be frowned upon. At school dances, rulers were used to make sure there was appropriate separation. Now I did have a sort-of-girlfriend in grade 8 and I was always getting in trouble at dances for being "too close".

Not lately but several months ago I was cleaning several per day. It got to the point where I really didn't even have to think about the steps. Most came with the previous version of Alureon which was fairly easy to remove using a 2nd PC to just delete the rootkit's files from the infected HD. Last week there was a machine infected by one of those fake AVs called "Antivirus Recovery", I think. For the life of me I couldn't get the rootkit off the drive, and since it was a machine with a Windows 7 license running Windows XP, I just zero'd out the drive and loaded Windows 7 after I verified the rootkit was out of slack space (where it was hiding, with some kind of launcher outside the boot sector).

It has gotten to the point, I don't want any problems with the computers, I'll just back up the stuff and reformat. Most of the time people don't have many settings changed. Unless it is a store register computer, in which case I will scan the drive in another computer and force run a registry scan.

On the 25th we got smashed by hail stones. The weather was weird: Warm @ 30C. We have a plastic corrugated verandah roof in the backyard that I was standing under. I felt some water drops on my head and then I looked up to see several holes had been made by the hail. I was hit on the wrist by one hail stone which hurt and I still have a small bruise. The average size of the hail stones in the area would probably be around 1/2 to 3/4 the size of a golf ball. Some were sharp, some were smooth. Three of our floodlights were also smashed to pieces and a few of our solar lights. One of my dog's is old and senseless and he has his own safe kennel to sleep in but I couldn't hear him barking (he wasn't in his kennel) until I saw him. So I ducked out from cover to bring him under cover. I covered the back of my neck with one hand and grabbed him with the other. He was fine but that's when I got hit on the wrist. My hearing was temporarily affected by the noise.
Trees were stripped of their leaves and cars were dented.
I have been preoccupied but if I get a chance I'll upload some video and/or pictures.

Saturday at about 3:05PM, I was cutting some rusted metal off the Cosmo. I stopped for a moment, just as the whole shop shook for about 2.5 seconds. The floor seemed to wobble and items on the shelves rattled. Afterwards I went outside to see if some huge vehicle had driven by or the construction next door had collapsed. But nothing, so I made some calls and found out that others felt it as well. We had an earthquake. A bit unusual considering that much of Ontario sits on a massive rock shelf called the Canadian Shield. It tends not to move.

Yeah that's pretty weird that you got an earthquake. I have experienced about two tremors in Melbourne and I have lived here my whole life. They each lasted no more than 3 seconds I guess. Japan also received a 7.0 recently and well New Zealand has been having after shocks since their deadly earthquake.
Fault lines:
About the hail storm we had; I'm hearing advertisements on the radio and TV about cars selling for reduced prices due to hail storm damage.

I think it's supposed to end on December 23rd of 2012, or maybe the 22nd. Either way all the people I've talked to who think the world will end on that date strangely aren't willing to sign over to me all their possessions, effective Dec. 24th, 2012. How very odd.
What I'd like to know is what gives those predicting the apocalypse automatic authority? Seems to me that someone predicting something crazy would automatically be considered crazy and ignored...yet the opposite seems to happen.

That's a good way to test if someone really believes what they claim to. Kids don't like to have their toys taken away and neither do adults. The potential threat of the world not coming to an end prevents them from signing over there possessions to you.
Some people say the world will end around the time you said. Some people say 2012 is just a starting point for some worldwide event that will be happening over this decade (Or is it the next three decades? They were not sure.) where ET sightings will increase to the point where we make contact. I'll take it with a grain of salt (not even) and wait till I see it for myself, or never. My father (retired) manages to find the time to research the ET spin of the story, so he passes on any information he finds to me and then I proceed to sift through.

There is something exotic about apocalypses. It's in scripture. I'd prefer to dust off my emergency evacuation pod and blast off to the moon while most of my fellow humans down on earth realise what apparently their scripture "told" them. I'd look down and say "Well this is what you were looking forward to, right?". LOL! Kind of sounds like a movie. I hope by the time anything apocalyptic happens we could all just simply move to another planetary body.

Based on the success of previous apocalypse predictions, zero, I'm not holding my breath that anything other than daily life happens in 2012. I'm of the opinion that anyone who believes anything apocalyptic is going to happen in 2012 is barking mad, and/or stupid.
As for ET sightings, those people would have to prove that there have been ET sightings in the past, because I'm thinking no. Unless the aliens have figured out a way to bypass physics as we know them, then the distances involved are just too great and there's very little chance of practical interstellar travel. Kind of sad, because it means no Star Trek future for us. Now CERN has demonstrated the possibility of neutrinos moving faster than light, which does open up the possibility of interstellar travel, but until it can be confirmed and applied to something a bit bigger, it's still in the realm of ain't gonna happen.
I think there's going to be more sun spots in 2012...probably some suicide cults of people who are assuming the world is over...and that's about it. Maybe Bieber will get another tattoo.
On another note I was in Canadian Tire this past Friday afternoon buying smoke detectors, because they had them on clearance for $5 each. $5 is pretty good for an ionization smoke detector, complete with 9V battery. As I was putting some in my basket there were two other people at the bin stocking up. I turned to them and asked:
"Anyone else here buying smoke detectors to harvest the Americium-241 for use as a radioactive source in experiments?"
The question was met with a bunch of blank stares.
"Oh, just me then?"
Someone backed away.
Then I smiled and went over to pay for my purchase.

I have read some articles over the internet telling that in THAT specific day ALSO something or "extraordinary event" will happen based on different aspects such as document of the ancient civilization.
Maybe, the ancient civilization KNOW something that we didn't know... OR we also know it from the start but we keep on ignoring IT.
But of course, I DON'T BELIEVE THEM THAT'S FOR SURE! ..their just a Human just like us! The end will come thats for sure because of our CARELESSNESS and SELFISHNESS in this planet where we live.
We can see alot of signs of drawback of what we had done in this World - flashfloods, Stronger hurricane/cyclone/typhoon, diseases, fammine, etc. (you name it!)

Yep, that's about all I've heard too, in closeness to reality. People have a tendency to blow things way out of proportion. The calender ends, the world doesn't. Dahhh! I wonder how many of these "world ending" things I have to go through before I'm twelve feet under. What's with this fascination about the world ending? If only we could just fly off into space to escape a threat we didn't have the ability to stop - this whole "world ends" thing becomes obsolete.

I doubt it's either. I don't know why people seem to give credibility to any kind of ancient prophecy. Yet at the same time they say "So and so a thousand years ago said the world will end tomorrow! OMG! Run!" they ignore the fact that so and so a thousand years ago also started the day by sacrificing a chicken to the tree in the front yard in order to bring the rains. Which is stupid, of course, because everyone knows you need to use a rooster.

Well, first you'd need to prove that there is a creator. Then you'd need to prove that creator is all seeing an all knowing. Then you'd need to prove that creator actually takes an active part in our lives. Since there's never been a shred of proof for any of that, it seems like kind of a strange thing to believe to me. About the same as believing that a Mayan calendar can signal the end of the world. Then you'd have to define what a sin is, why a creator would make us with a built in sin, etc. etc. etc.

Yep. It's been covered time and time again by even the mainstream media, yet people still think that somehow the Mayans had some kind of advanced knowledge that about a million prophets before and after them didn't. Probably the same people that believe aliens helped the Egyptians build the pyramids, that out ancient civilizations accomplished stuff that "we could never do today", blah blah blah. It seems to all come from a stunning lack of understanding about how the world works, then the inability to accept the logical explanation (or understand it) and instead accept a batshit insane and frankly ridiculous story instead.

That is AWESOME! So very steampunk, and completely pointless. I actually made an autosmoker years ago because my brother was doing a science project on smoking. Not even remotely as fancy, but it could smoke several cigarettes per minute. Took about 10 smokes to make the filter so restrictive that it had to be changed, as I recall. Yuck.

I got back from a 39km bike ride a few hours ago. Took about 5 hours. I almost skidded off into a river. I was going fast down a slope and at the bottom there was dry dirt in the crest of a sharp corner. The back tire lost grip and slid left while I was tilted right. I quickly released the rear break and shifted my weight forward and luckily my rear tire returned to its position.
EDIT: Some people were interested in the route we took. So here is an image that is pretty self explanatory. Sorry about the shit quality.

People love automation. Our computers are self automated monsters. People just want things done as quickly as possible without having to deal with tedious things, unless those tedious things happen to be of a creative nature (e.g. hobbyist electronics, model air-planes etc.).
Speech recognition has been a tough one but the only way I can see it making a huge impact is if the computer has a human-like AI in order to understand what someone is saying. In order to understand what a person is saying you need an enormous amount of knowledge. Even the most simple sentence or paragraph requires lots of knowledge. E.g. "Mary saw the puppy through the window. Mary wanted the puppy." You then ask the computer: "How could Mary get the puppy?" Think about it. How many things do you need to know to solve that problem?
The speech recognition on Windows OS has little titbits of knowledge pre-programmed into it to solve language ambiguities. This is automation to an extent but far from talking to a human-like AI which does what you tell it and never complains (maybe even ask you for clarification). Now that would be world changing and I'd imagine it could get quite controversial, but I think it's inevitable. Humanoid drones will probably come next, utilising this technology. This is how I see the future anyway. We've all seen those drone aircraft the US military has. It can be said that they have AI but there is still no clear definition for what AI is. I believe the predator drones will RTB on their own at bingo fuel and on mission completion or abort.
The future will be full of many great things. I just hope that the countries that have a world changing military strength stay friendly to each other. If they do then all we need to worry about is earthly natural disasters and the very rare chance of a Meteorite.
EDIT again:
Aaron I read that story about the radioactive boy you posted. I have never heard anything like it before. That boy's crazy.

Ah, I thought you had a smartphone app or something. I've been looking for such an app for my Blackberry but all of them tie into a website on which you must pay a subscription. I'd rather just pay once for the app and have it as a standalone thing than rely on a data connection or some website that wants to sell my information.
Ooohhh...a random search through AppWorld just found something that looks like what I want:
http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/139?lang=en
For $10 it's worth it and I'll purchase it next spring (when the weather for biking is once again here).
39KM is a good ride. We did the London to Port Stanley ride again this year (with the bike cart, with new and improved tongue/hitch) in August. Sure it was 35C out, but it was fun and we made good time. 49KM from my front door to destination in about 6 hours, with lots of breaks and goofing off. Once again champaign was opened at the cliffs overlooking Lake Erie.
I wouldn't want to plot the trip on a publicly accessible map because the destination is a "secret" cabin in the woods owned by a friend of a friend.

Cool! I need to go bike riding more often.
My mother used to cover about 100km in 6 hours on dirt tracks. She'd go everywhere and not just in Melbourne, but all over the country and on islands around the country. Sometimes she'd have to carry her bike because the terrain was unrideable and even throw her bike over a fence to continue her journey.
My next goal is to ride all the may down to the beach. As you can see from the map I posted, I almost got there. I won't be taking the long way though.
No promises but I hope to post some pictures as well.
See ya.

LMFAO!
Some authoritively voiced door-knocker was trying to convince my dad to change his electricity company. While that was happening a telemarketer called to which I answered. They wanted to know if we had an internet connection and if we download stuff. I said "Of course!". The woman wanted to know what kind of stuff I downloaded, so I said "Videos" naturally. My father had just finished with the door-knocker and I gave him the "The facial expression" letting him know it's another telemarketer. I handed over the phone to him and he continued the conversation by saying that he likes to download pornography videos of the "fat woman" variety. The telemarketer wanted him to turn on his computer. She asked him what he saw on the screen to which he replied "a fat woman doing naughty things to herself". Keep in mind that he was doing this in a funny voice. The telemarketer asked him if the computer had finished starting to which he replied "it's a 1981 XT, it takes forever to start!". Long story short, "You you wanna sucka my dik?" and then he hangs up. The person on the other end of the line (India perhaps) was also laughing.
I don't know what they were trying to sell me but it was clear from the get-go that I didn't need it. They have no idea who they are talking to. All of the computer I have made and maintain, all work like clockwork.

Long bike rides are great, and it's really only recently that I've started heading out of the city on a regular basis. Before about a year ago I'd basically stick to the bike paths (London does have a lot of them, and they all sort of start 2 blocks from my house) and exploring around the city. 2 days before the Port Stanley ride I followed one of the paths to the end, continued outside the city, rode a bit loop via country roads, found an abandoned nursing home, and ended up covering, like you, 39KM.
I noticed you don't have a light, nor any kind of speedometer/odometer? I can get not having a bicycle computer, but NO LIGHT?! It's actually illegal here to ride at night without front illumination, rear and side reflectors. Well, also without a helmet to but that's not enforced. You may or may not be able to see it in the pictures but there are two 75W fog lights mounted to my handle bars, with a battery pack made of 2 x 12V 7AH batteries in a box at the back. They light up the trails quite well.
We get those telemarketing calls as well, though sadly never when I'm home. I'd really like to fire up a Windows 98 virtual machine and then just play absolutely dumb as they ask me to do stuff. There are YouTube videos of people keeping these douchebags on the line for 2 - 3 hours!

I think I would really have to plan ahead if I were to ride out of Melbourne. The city covers a wide area and I'm not sure if I have built up enough stamina to ride for that long.
Yeah I only have reflectors on my bike. I'm not familiar with the bike laws around here but I think riding without a helmet is illegal but not enforced, just like in London. I always wear a helmet regardless of the laws. I have ridden past cops on that bike and they didn't pull me up about anything. The cops here are more concerned with things that have an engine in them. When it's dark is when I'm on my way back home and when I take the shortest paths (roads). There is plenty of illumination so I don't have much of a need for a light - just adds more weight. Do you see that coiled up lock that I have on my bike? Well, SOMEONE lost the key and I can't get it off without breaking it. Damn.

Same with me. From about 2001 until 2007 or so I might have ridden once, then I finally decided to purchase a new bike. My previous bike, which I had since I was about 10, ended up outside when I needed the garage for Phase 1 of Project Tina and sadly, deteriorated. Then in 2007 Canadian Tire had a big bike sale so I thought it was time again. I had forgotten how awesome bike riding is.

Yeah, probably a bit different than London. London doesn't really sprawl out, the city just basically ends where it ends on all sides so basically 8KM - 12KM in any direction gets you out of the city.

I wish police here would enforce laws against cyclists, because I am so bloody sick of seeing cyclists act like the laws don't apply to them. They are constantly running stop signs/lights, not signalling, pulling into traffic, and just causing a massive traffic disruption. Hell, this past summer I very nearly hit another cyclist while I was on my bike as he pulled off a sidewalk onto the road without looking, as I was booking it at about 50 KM/H. If I didn't see what he was about to do with a seconds notice, I would have hit him hard as he pulled in front of me.
Cut the lock off? The only thing that annoys me about my bike is the shape of the frame precludes convenient lock storage. So when I need one, it has to hang off the handle bars or in another annoying spot. Maybe I should make a bracket.

The foglights I used were just a regular old fog light that you would mount on a car. $5 on sale at the local Princess Auto. Please excuse the poor quality picture below, but my good camera is at my shop and the nearest camera was my Playbook. Good camera, but like most phone/tablet cameras, not good at all in low light.
I made a simple bracket with some 3/4" steel tubing. You can't see the switches but each light has it's own switch, mounted off a tab I welded onto the tubing, behind the handle bars. At the the time I didn't have a TIG so I couldn't have made it in aluminum.
LED foglights would probably be better for weight and power consumption. You can get them at most off road stores. These lights only came with 25W bulbs but I swapped in some brighter bulbs from the electronics store. Notice one is pointed down, one is level. That way I can run one on the road and not blind drivers, and another on the trail to provide long distance illumination. They work quite well.
The batteries are mounted behind the seat in a steel box. Adds a bit of weight but has been inconsequential. One day I'll make a new box out of aluminum.
They are two 12V 7Ah batteries in parallel. I've never drained them so far and have run the lights for 5 hours straight, so you could likely get away with one battery when using more efficient LED lighting.

I appreciate the kind words.
There are some very strong LEDs out there these days, strong enough to be used as headlights by Audi and other OEMs. In most cases the colour spectrum is closer to daylight so they are more efficient for our eyes. The only problem seems to be price. Some Googling has not shown any decent LED fog light for under $150, when you can often get the incandescent version for $5-$10 on sale. I don't think a single LED bulb will do the job in a housing designed for incandescent since there is limited space. Normally the LED "bulbs" are a group of LEDs. Quite a lot of them in most of the off road fog lights I've seen.
FWIW, I briefly had a Schwinn LED bicycle light, which sucked. All it was good for was projecting a weak dot a few feet from the bike. That's what prompted me to make this system.

Since we're on the topic of LEDs...
Last month my dad wanted me to convert his pillar mounted (sphere style) Verandah light to use LEDs. He wanted the light to harvest solar energy during the day and store the energy in batteries mounted in the light's base. He also wanted the light to turn off and turn on automatically in day-light and night-light respectively. It looks really nice.
During the design stage of the project I was comparing many different types of LEDs. Having done this research I estimate I could design, build and install a high-power/high-brightness LED on my bike along with its supporting circuitry for around $50 to $70. The LED input power is appropriately approximated to be around 10 Watts. Equivalent luminous intensity (not flux) can be compared to a 75 Watt incandescent light bulb.
Many of the powerful LEDs I have seen have a "viewing angle" of 120deg but 80% and above of their luminous flux intensity is beamed within an angle of 80deg according to the graphs given in their datasheets.

I hear ya man and you are totally right about not being able to get anything durable and totally functional for under $150. I was looking at superbrightled dot com like I said in my earlier post for some kind of cheap alternative.
Some nice but pricey examples included:

Overkill for a bike at 24v power requirement but a good consideration for a boat or RV or garage:
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&category=MLED&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2Ffloodlight.htm#photos
These 1 & 3 watt Landscaping LEDs don't look too bad but at between $35 - $50 it's not exactly a bargain:

Then there is this bad boy for $120
http://stores.intuitwebsites.com/hstrial-QualiRegResou/-strse-40/1000-Lumen-Waterproof-Bike/Detail.bok
But I dunno, me thinks your solution trumps them all since I already have a nice small deep cycle battery that would be perfect to mimic your design with. Anyway, I will have to see what kind of prices I will get for a set of low profile fog lights but these are the ones I have sourced online:
http://www.princessauto.com/pal/product/8194706/Driving/fog-Lights/Xtreme-Driving-Lights
For $12 and whatever it costs to mod another bulb and the wiring....now THAT would be frugal!

Hey bud, I am sure they don't have Canadian Tire stores in Australia but this local hardware store (sometimes referred lovingly as crappy tire) has these:
http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/3/HouseHome/Lighting/OutdoorSecurityLighting/PRD~0524887P/HeathZenith+Motion+Sensor+Solar+Powered+LED+Security+Light.jsp?locale=en
I was thinking that you could mod it so that the solar panel is located out of sight and in the path of south facing sunlight and I know on these units you can disable the sensor so that it just operates automagically with the light sensor only essentially turning it on or off based on the availability of sunlight. You might have to fashion some kind of light diffuser so it shines evenly in a round glass bulb but I could see how something like this would easily work for the application you are describing.

I've actually got two similar devices. They stopped working since the hail storm we got on the 25th on December. I think their solar panels are smashed but I haven't checked yet.
I suppose you could mod one them to do what I did with my solar verandah light but you'd have to figure out how to bypass the Passive Infra-red Sensor so that it is constantly in the "motion detected" state. It's too clumsy for my standards and at $62.99 (not including mods), a total rip-off.
I'll post some pictures of the final product and maybe even my schematic later.

Awesome work. Just remember that you can always use a strip of lexan or acrylic to protect the solar panel. I did that with a panel that kept getting smashed on my boat and it worked out pretty good.
I love solar power\heating devices, I only wish the rest of the world would adapt quickly to the solar invasion. Check this out, I want to create one of these for my garage and shed, looks simple enough.

I primarily source my supplies from element14. Sometimes I might go to a local Jaycar store. For big and expensive projects I might order from Digikey with their huge product range because then I can justify their $30 shipping cost.

That's awesome! I wish more people would take the responsibility of enrolling in courses like this. Rather, it should be mandatory. Especially in Canada where we have between 4 and 6 months of snow, there should be a winter driving course. Yet there are no specific requirements or training for winter driving.

I just got back. It was a great experience. Clearly the Forester outperformed the other cars that were there when it comes to braking and control.
Performance aside, the day started at 8:30 and finished at 4:30. Emergency stopping, Chicanes and Obstacle avoidance were the main practical exercises. The day was also filled with theory lessons.
It would be great if all drivers experienced what I did today.

The course was held at a raceway. I only got a chance to take pics from the grand-stand before we all started the program. The pics don't depict the program in any way. For privacy reasons I was not allowed to use a camera device once we were doing the practical exercises.

Well that tears it, flying on a wing suit and base jumping with a puppy are now on my list of things to do before I die.
On another, more or less luminescent note, I ordered some Europium glow paint from United Nuclear and tried to make glow in
the dark clothes. Bought a pair of white jeans and a nice white shirt. However as soon as I opened the paint it was fairly obvious that it wouldn't work. It wasn't so much "paint" as it was "paste". Like an Elmer's glue type stuff, but gritty from the glow powder. Figuring I'd try anyway, I thinned it out with water (there were no instructions but I figured out it was water based) until it would spray, then loaded it into my little spray gun and started blasting a shirt. Coverage was terrible and I used 90% of the 4oz bottle (heavily cut with water) to get only a moderate coverage on the shirt, so I gave up after the gun clogged for the 3rd time. The paste was very gritty and the grit was clogging it up. What I ended up with was a vaguely glowing shirt, that obviously had the potential to be very cool, but would require a LOT more paint (maybe 5 bottles?) to be awesome. So I washed it out when I got home, and fired off an angry email to United Nuclear about the fact they should make it clear on their website that their glow paint isn't really paint, but in fact "gritty glow paste".
To their credit they got back to me quickly and explained that it was more of an artists paint, and not something that can be thinned and sprayed. I agreed and said that being the case, they should still include a note on their website so that others won't make the same mistake.
Now I won't let the dream of glow clothes die. I'm fairly sure that with a few bottles of the stuff, diluted just enough with water to soak clothes, that I could make glow clothes. But a better option may be to buy some of their Europium glow powder and then figure out some kind of binder to mix it with, so that I could dip clothes. Maybe all it would take is gelatin? Who knows...

I've heard of people mixing the glow powder with hair gel and coming out with a cool result. I've even thought of trying it myself. Maybe if you soaked the clothes in the diluted paint/paste it might work somewhat.

I bought one of those LED arrays from Element14 and I have to say that they are very bright. You wouldn't want to look directly at them. I think I will buy another but this time a higher CCT (Cool White) and roughly double the luminosity at the same electrical power input. Fortunately it happens to be no dearer. A video may be in the pipeline.

I bought one of these a few days ago:
http://www.asus.com.au/Notebooks/Superior_Mobility/ASUS_ZENBOOK_UX21E/
Bloody brilliant device. 128GB SSD using SATA3, Core i7, 4GB RAM, USB 3.0, HDMI, VGA, WiFi, BlueTooth blah blah blah.
A good benchmark was to see if this thing could play a BluRay movie, which it did without a problem. Also the sound quality from this thing is amazing. Battery life changes depending on what you do of course but in the lowest power mode you can probably get about 4-5 hours of constant usage. I haven't been unfortunate enough to run out of juice yet. Boot time is about 17 seconds and to get out of standby takes less than 2 seconds. The chassis is CNC milled from a block of Aluminium so it's quite rigid.
The display is very bright and can be seen easily outdoors but comparing the contrast to one of those Apple MacBook Air thingys it could be a little better. Still, this display is brighter.
Lucky for me, just after I bought it the prices increased.
I might post some pics if/when I get a chance.

Actually a tablet PC is what I was trying to avoid because I already have one. The price goes up when you want those features and I didn't want another tablet. Asus sell tablets as well but I took all factors into account and what I ended up with was this Ultrabook. The swiveling mechanism on some tablets is a likely point of failure and the screen as well since it's going to have pressure applied on it from the user. I wanted to eliminate those risks with this purchase. Actually my tablet is undergoing a warranty service right now but not related to the swiveling mechanism or the screen. Over the past four years I have bought three laptops each one except my new Ultrabook had to be shipped off for a warranty service. The Lenovo Y510 had a bad hinge because of faulty design and the HP touchsmart had a bad video chip. It goes to show that you should always buy the extended warranty. I have high hopes for this Ultrabook though. It's so robust and as far as I can tell only has two moving parts bar the keyboard and speakers - the fan and the hinge. The thing is pretty much solid metal. However, since this machine doesn't have any user replaceable parts it can cost an arm and a leg to get fixed should something go wrong. Which is another reason why you should buy an extended warranty.

Check this out guys, your tablet PC conversation reminded me about this brainwave controlled skateboard that uses an IPAD as the human interface. I saw it on the Discovery channel this past weekend. The original used an XBOX 360 Kinect unit to enable the rider to use their hands as the gas and brakes but things like weather and sun spots would impair user input. So they went to this new interface that uses brain waves to interpret system commands. Check it out...pretty cool.

Stupid, shit Lead-Free solder. It doesn't have the same properties as Leaded Solder. It cracks and doesn't respond well to temperature changes. That was the cause of my HP TouchSmart needing a warranty service. I woman who worked at the place where it was being serviced said that Lead-Free solder is causing an even bigger environmental problem than just leaving the Lead in the solder because so many laptops are breaking down because of bad solder joints. I'm guessing that not many repair houses have the expensive equipment needed to re-flow a bad video IC, so what they do is ship the whole motherboard off to the manufacturer where they either repair or scrap it. So much for Lead-Free solder. I have never used the stuff because I've only heard bad things about it. Also, the woman said that the hard drives of today sometimes fail completely without any lead-up of events thanks to this shitty solder. Well fuck me sideways! I hope that's not true.
Also, has anyone noticed an increase in prices for hard disk drives? I read that it's caused by natural disasters in countries where they are made, slowing production down and thus causing a global shortage. I also read that prices should come down again sometime this quarter, hopefully.

Yeah I said "hard disk drives", specifically the run of the mill 7200RPM ones from WD & Seagate.
They have definitely gone up in price since the start of the year. Solid state drives are still expensive. I'm glad my new Ultrabook has one - so damn fast. A file copy peaked at around 500MB/s and then reduced to a sustained 100-200MB/s. I hate waiting for those mechanical dinosaurs. When I'm working I just want things done NOW, not ASAP.
HDDs are great for backing-up and archiving but when it comes to tasks that require lots of random access to data on the disk, well, they just suck.

I used lead free solder when I put the air system into the shop a few years ago. Though that was a plumbing application and not something like a circuit board that has a complete different set of stresses. The absolute worse part about lead free solder is that it won't mix with most leaded solders properly. Cleaning it all off without causing damage is a bitch.
This past week I set up a Toshiba Protege Z835 for a customer. What a hell of a machine! Ultrabook size, super thin, Core I7, 4 GB RAM, and I think a 128 GB SSD. The only thing that kept me from buying one also is the lack of a pointing nipple, and the fact it wasn't a tablet.
Hard drive prices have been high for a while. The good thing is that the prices are driving down those of SSDs, little by little. And once you go SSD, you never go back.

That's what I am waiting for. When SSDs were first comming into view on shelves around here, a 480GB SSD cost around $1600. Now the same capacity SSD can be bought for $1000. Hopefully by the end of the decade SSDs are mainstream and computer manufacturers are no longer installing HDDs. I wonder what will happen to HDDs. I suppose it'll be like the transition from audio tapes to CDs, or like VHS tapes to DVD.

Exactly! The only time spinning disks come into my life now are when I have no choice but to use them (HDD) because they can store the hundreds and thousands of GB I need to achieve what I want with my computers, plus they are cheap compared to SSDs. I very rarely use optical disks now. I store everything on large HDDs and everyone can get what they need through a 1Gb/s network connection. I have over 6TB of storage at the moment and I need more!
Years ago I went into a chilly server room at one of the universities where I live and a 1-3TB HDD was huge in physical size compared to what I can get now from my local computer shop for around $130 ($30 up since the start of the year).
All of the video rental places are closing down around here. I wanted to rent The Titanic BluRay but one place was closing down just up the road, and another didn't have it. I wanted to "back it up" on my HDD so that anyone could watch at any time.
Hmmm, maybe that's why the rental places are going out of business. Oops I did it again!
No, it's all these on-line video rental services that are choking the life out of the real stores.

The video stores have been closing down here as well. Blockbuster declared bankruptcy and closed all their stores, and a number of the local chains have closed as well. They say it's because of Netflix and online rentals. Not sure if I believe that. The Netflix catalog for Canada is a wasteland and without a streaming box or something that can get it onto the TV screen, you are stuck in front of a computer watching.
I have friends who have "cut the cord" and cancelled their cable subscriptions. Works for about a month until they get tired of paying $1 per episode, the hassle of streaming to a TV, finding torrents, or just not being able to watch the same thing everyone else sees. My favourite method of acquiring movies is to just PVR them off of the movie channels. Then watch at my leisure. After putting a 500GB HD into my PVR it's good for several hundred recordings.
The new hybrid hard drives are pretty interesting. The tests Maximum PC have done has showed almost all the benefit of an SSD, but with the cheap capacity of a spinning disc.

I have seriously considered getting one of those. I prefer to get one of those SSD & HDD hybridisers. That way I can choose what cache size (SSD size) and what total capacity (HDD size) I want. But of course the speed boosts you get come down to how good the caching algorithms are in the hybridiser. I hope that word makes sense in this context.

Well those last few were a bit random.
Do the LED bulbs have diffusers? It may be the highly directional nature of the LEDs which make them seem dimmer than an incandescent. Also the fact that the spectrum on an LED is so pure.
In reading about the motherboards and adapters that hybridize regular HDs with some flash, it seems that they aren't as reliable as I'd like. Weirdness with storage is not something I tolerate.
Several years ago I was BBQ'ing and got bored. I had some printers set up in the basement for review/testing so I started printing out funny pictures from the Internet, and stapling them to the garage wall. A few days later, most of interior of the garage was wallpapered with funny Internet pictures.
The officer was likely taking a nap or otherwise not paying attention. Or perhaps not in a position to get up and going quickly enough. Time to buy a lottery ticket.

I can only imagine if I was that passenger. I'd poke at the pilot a few times, ask if he's awake. Nope, not awake. OK, no problem. "It's my aircraft, I have control" and grab the stick. Call the tower, declare pan pan pan with an unconscious pilot, and ask for an approach.
Speaking of crashing, as I was driving to work on Thursday, I passed by this.

ON LEDs:

Not sure what you mean by diffuser? The LEDs are cylindrical, I got these 45 LED jobbies:
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2F1157_LED_spider_light.htm
They turned out to be really dim, I then purchased a 90 LED version of theses SMD forward firing LEDs. I think I should look up some multi-directional versions. The 90 LED version was only a touch dimmer that the conventional filament bulbs. But I am hoping the light meter will show the difference between the two bulbs.
I have a bunch of power supplies that I have already sold, there are about 8 remaining which I am willing to give away free to AARONCAKE.NET members. Let me know if there is anything you could use as I am going to dump them at my local electronics surplus shop within the next two weeks: http://liquidsurplus.webs.com/

I watched Titanic [1997] today in 3D. It's a bloody good movie which I havn't seen in several years. In the cinema, the girls in the rows behind me were crying and spilling their pop-corn everywhere. I have to say, when James Cameron says he put a lot of effort into making the movie look like it was shot in 3D, it really does show. I have heard that George Lucas's Star Wars Episode 1 wasn't all that 3D, but I haven't seen it in 3D myself. I suppose that if you want to see a proper 3D movie, just goto IMAX. Prometheus - the new alien movie directed by Ridley Scott - will be showing at IMAX as well as regular cinemas.

Nope, no diffusers based on the website. Some LEDs have an opaque section at the top that smooths out the pinpount light source.

Since they are just replacing marker lights I wouldn't expect them to be much brighter than the original bulbs, which are kind of dim.

I've been to IMAX several times. It helps when the biggest screen in the southern hemisphere is only a 30 minute drive away. I would imagine Avatar as being an epic experience. I think I watched it in 3D at a normal cinema.

Hey Aaron, what kind of attachment are you using on your die grinder? I have been looking for something that I can use to clean up imperfections on metal like you do in your videos but I am having a hard time finding the tool. I checked at Home Depot and Crappy Tire but the attachments they have are all crappy despite being labled "automotive grade"
I am going to check Princess Auto today but if you an pass on the hint that would be greatly appreciated.

As for the die grinder, what you've seen on the videos are just cheap hardware store mounted grinding stones. They don't work well on low speed tools, and not very well on air grinders either because the cheap air grinders tend to slow down a lot under load.

All I gotta say is that motor-mouth's and plastic smiles are surely becoming the norm as mainstream media continues to brainwash the minds of young people into brainless phonies designed to constantly spend money on consumer goods as peddled by television reality shows and approved and further promoted by their equally brain dead peers. You know, I went to a giant toy store outlet the other day looking for a model Willy's army jeep because I think building or buying and restoring an old one is going to be my next project after the RZ350 racing bike is done this winter....And would you believe that in a giant outlet such as this one, there was not one model, car, plane or otherwise in the store. After searching far and wide, I was only able to find them at a specialty hobby store that was selling what I saw online for $6 with free shipping for $24. So I bought online but I am just so amazed that there is obviously no market for that sort of thing anymore, I am having so much fun putting this plastic model together. Nowadays it's all video games and barbie dolls so yeah, it doesn't surprise me that Miley Cyrus is actually considered good enough to be adored by millions of brutally ignorant idiots.
On another note - Aaron, I thought you might have been using die grinder attchements like these disc types: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/6/Tools/PowerToolAccessories/SandingPolishingAccessories/PRD~0547416P/Mastercraft+11-piece+Flap+and+Polishing+Disc+Set.jsp?locale=en

Are you serious? What a shitty toy store. I have to say that accurate models of anything are usually only found in hobby stores anyway. None the less I would expect some models in a "giant outlet". I haven't been to a Toys R Us in a while, not that I have a need to.
Entering dreamy mode:
Britney Spears's song "Sometimes" playing on an overhead CRT in Toys R Us as I wait at the checkout. Good memories.
Exiting dreamy mode:
Woaahhh! And I'm back.

Yeah, I don't recall seeing any models of the sort you mentioned in a Toys R Us. I only see them in hobby stores, in pre-made or kit form. I bought a McLaren F1 model years ago from a hobby store, but it was pre-made.
Just for fun:
Hobby store 1: http://g.co/maps/427cu
Hobby store 2: http://g.co/maps/jvuqp
I think no. 2 was where I got my McLaren.

I don't think it's becoming the norm, it has probably been the norm for a while. And likely a lot longer than most people would assume. Likely as soon as cheap mass produced consumer goods became available, which coincidentally was just after a time of rationing.
This is kind of timely because two weeks ago all the students moved out of town, and I was completely and truly disgusted to see all the garbage they left behind. Whole houses just emptied to the curb. What were obviously brand new computer desks, book shelves, cabinets, etc. just smashed up and thrown out. TVs, beds, microwaves, everything tossed. The only redeeming fact is that the scrappers were able to pick up most of what is recyclable. And the actual garbage! Piles of it! I struggle to generate one bag of garbage a week at home, two bags every 2 months at my shop, and maybe one bag a month at work. And at work the "garbage" is mainly plastic packaging. Everything else is recycled.

And that sucks, because I'm a Toys-R-Us shareholder. Then again, the local store has a fairly decent model selection. Not the massive isle it used to be, but still OK.

Oh, those discs. Mine came from a local fastener store and were referred to as a "surface prep kit". Came with the mandrel and then several discs. The discs are also sold separately and made by many manufacturers. They have a little thread on the back which threads into the mandrel. Probably the most useful sanding accessory when blending welds.

If you look up some old episodes of "Tuner Transformation" on Google video (does that still exist?) you should be able to spot me. Also I helped with an episode of "War Of The Wheels" where I built the wiring harness the CP Racing team used for their engine swap. I've reached out to sponsors regarding the Cosmo videos but haven't heard anything. The way all those TV shows work is that the cars they work on are dictated by what parts the sponsors are selling. No big pocket industry types behind Mazda rotarys.

My turn for some random...
Radioactive Strontium-90. The Sr-90 is plated onto the head of the needle for cloud chamber experiments and as a source of beta radiation for other purposes. Close to the tube on my CDV-700 with the beta shield open it regesters about 1500 CPM of beta radiation.

Nice little Geiger counter Aaron. In 2010 I performed some experiments with various radioactive samples at a university. I used an application specific, handheld computer to gather data from a sensor which was placed near the sample.

If our highschool chemistry class had included a little nuclear chemistry, there is a fairly good chance that I would have continued on to university and pursued that as a major. Radioactivity is awesome, and ever since I was young I've been fairly fascinated by it. One of the greatest moments of my childhood was taking a tour of the Bruce Nuclear plant. Sadly they don't offer the tour anymore (instead they take you across the street to a reactor mockup) but back then we got to see the whole plant.
That was only 0.1uC of Sr-90. 1uC of Cs-137 will peg the counter at 30,000 CPM of combined beta and gamma (the CDV-700 can't see alpha as it won't penetrate the tube...alpha being the Justin Beiber of radiation...no penetration).

And forget conventional mainstream education Aaron, you got the brains to do whatever you want and you are young but it looks like you are focused so your success in life IMO is inevitable. I met a guy who grew up in my neighborhood in the 70's who designed a microchip and sold it to some U.S. based firm in the mid 90's and made millions, got to retire in his 30's. Never graduated high school.

It's winter here.
We seem to have infrequent bursts of posts on this forum - enough to keep track of.
I don't think I would like the climate in Canada. The impression I get is that it's mostly a cold place despite what temperature extremes might occur there.

Yeah I've heard they are mostly similar. Melbourne has been rated a few times as being the worlds most liveable city. Toronto and Melbourne have been called "sister cities" because they are so similar.

It starts to get cold around the end of October, and is generally warming up around mid-April. There's often a mid-winter warm streak as well. Last year was quite strange though because in February, we were seeing 20C days and there was almost no snow the entire winter (I think I used the snow blower once). Yeah, that's different than a climate in which probably no one has ever seen a snow blower. Cold for me starts at -30C, and in the same sense, hot starts around 30C. Then again I'm not really one to complain about or discuss the weather. Everyone else seems obsessed by it. I'm just concerned if it interferes with my plans.
So they're bringing back SimCity. Hm, I don't know about that. SimCity 2000 had just about the right mix of fun gameplay vs. micromanagement. I couldn't deal with SimCity 3000 because it just turned into a chore to maintain every little variable. I hope that the new version has a "casual" and "crazy" mode so that us players whom want to just build infrastructure and watch a kickass city grow can do so.

-30C temperatures are unheard of in Australia:
HIGHEST RECORDED TEMPERATURE:
Oodnadatta, South Australia 50.7 C (123.3 F) on the 2nd January, 1960
LOWEST RECORDED TEMPERATURE:
Charlotte Pass, New South Wales -23.0 C (-9.4 F) on the 29th June, 1994
Problems arise if we don't get enough rain which causes a drought about once per decade. Tough water restrictions are put in place. Sky rocketing temperatures for many days on end only worsen the drought and can cause an increase in heat exhaustion for some people. The endless high-humidity during hot weather is so draining and the cost of air-conditioning isn't cheap especially since electricity rates have only been increasing. Bush fires are also a major concern during hot weather. During bad bush fires the sky goes orange and the smell of burning trees fills the air, even though I live nowhere near the bush. I just goto a shopping centre and enjoy their air-conditioning if the heat is too much. Weather is a big part of Australia and it's something we need to adapt to. I like the weather up in Queensland more though - you don't have seasons there, just hot or wet, but after seeing that cyclone...

We just had a little tremor (5.3) about 2 hours ago. These things are very rare in Australia. I was mopping the kitchen floor when I felt the ground shake and the fridge wobble for a few seconds. The internet dropped out momentarily. A call to 000 (emergency services) was not answered - probably too many people calling.
The last tremor I remember feeling was about 10 years ago. I was looking into a bedroom from the hallway and the bed was wobbling - never seen anything like it.

Probably not a lot though. AdSense on YouTube is not a huge money maker from my experience. I think you need a lot of views and the type of audience that will click on anything as long as it's bright and flashy (kids, much of the adult population).

This website earns enough, but far less than it did before the economy crashed. Advertisers are just spending a lot less on clicks, because people are spending a lot less on their products. YouTube earnings are low, quite low. Partly because I don't use interstitial ads. I hate those things. If I wanted to see commercials, I'd watch television (and not use my PVR to skip them).

i just clicked on every ad twice. Do the clicks have to come from unique IP addresses in order to payout or should I just click everything like 50 times every time I visit your page? By the way, I got a standup sandblasting cabinet complete with media and an extra light for $200! I had to drive all the way out to Hamilton but in a Honda civic with a trailer it only cost me $25 in gas round trip. Check it out:
I am just amazed at how quickly it cleans up old parts to brand spanking new.
Quick shine on the bench grinder wire brush and voila
Like take these handlebar ends for example - Before sandblasting and after:
And then this is the part sandblasted and the other finished.
Both parts cleaned and ready for paint in just under 10 min. Would have cost me around $30 for both those parts if done in a shop and I have two sets of brake calipers, clutch and brake levers, handlebars and a butt load of engine parts to blast (i know I said the words butt and blast in the same sentence) so I think I did good. Been watching the online classifieds for about 3 months until this beaut came up so I just had to snag it.

Google detects click fraud (clicking on every ad twice ) and automatically cancels those clicks. The advertisers pay for those clicks so ads should only be clicked if there is genuine interest. That said if I Google something and see what I want in both a paid ad and the free results, I'll click the paid ad just so that the company knows their advertising is working.
That blast cabinet looks exactly like mine, except red while mine is blue. Nothing like media blasting to clean stuff up. I wonder how I ever wasted time with wire wheels before. The only thing I've found is that the suction blasting gun that comes with the cabinet is pretty week and just uses a load of air. So I drilled a big hole in mine and slipped in the nozzle from my 5 gallon pressure blaster.

I had an old amplifier out in my garage that was black and I spray painted part of it red. Then I got tired of it and started sanding it. As long as the clear is quality I don't see any problems. A 2 part clear is likely what you want because regular spray can stuff dries with pores caused by the solvents evaporating. There is catalyzed clear available in a can from Eastwood though. You break a little glass ampule of the catalyst inside before you use it, and then have about an hour or so to spray. POR-15 is also available clear though if exposed to sunlight it will discolour.

Awhile back I bought a can of a Duplicolor clearcoat and it was horrible. The nozzle would clog and since it was an "all direction" spray can, you couldn't clean the nozzle. So I bought the $1.99 stuff. (I forgot the brand) Works the same, easy to clean, and it works with my gun attachment. I still don't recommend the 99 cent crap at walmart though.

I found that if you keep a cap full of paint thinner and drop the spray head into it and clear it with the air nozzle from an air compressor to clear the hole, you can get some pretty decent results out of a rattle can. There is a decent article on it here: http://domlnator.tripod.com/id21.html and it is rather a pain to have to constantly go back and forth to ensure you don't have any paint spittle, drops or inconsistent spray but it is possible to get semi-pro results from a rattle can. It just takes five times longer so the moral of the story is.....get an HVLP spray gun which is my next step for sure. FYI: I have also found VHT clear to be a very good product. Out of the can, the clear is pretty tough, but if you can bake the parts after they have been coated, the finish is not only rock hard, it stands up rather well to chemicals such as brake fluid which is what I used to test the finish considering I am going to be coating the brake master cylinder. I will post pics as soon as I get a chance to snap them.

That's been my experience with VHT as well. Baking makes a huge difference in the quality and toughness of the finish. At this point I also have a cup of acetone readily available when using any spray can, especially the weld through primer. High solid counts mean the nozzles clock quickly so after use, a quick dip in acetone and blast of air helps tremendously.
The little spray gun I've used in the Cosmo videos (painting the engine parts) was about $30 at Princess Auto and I've likely used it 50 times since purchased. Some paints are only available in cans (like POR-15) so the gun is the only choice. Or if doing a large area or bunch of items with just basic hardware store paint, a can of Tremclad is $6 vs maybe needing 5 rattle cans. Of course to run a gun you need air, and that must be filtered dry air. Really for everyday painting it probably doesn't matter if a bit of compressor oil or moisture get into the gun. For POR-15 and other high end products, the air supply must be perfectly clean. A water/air separator at the compressor with a filter, and then a desiccant filter at the gun is necessary.

Google maps has been my choice for a few years partially because it is integrated into the toolbar. Just visited Mapquest and yep, it basically does the same thing it always has. Just that Google maps integrates a lot more stuff like POIs, bicycle routes, etc. Plus reviews can be hilarious. Lookup Google reviews for your old high school.
Interestingly, mapping London to St. Thomas in Google maps as a bicycle trip picks almost the exact same route automatically that I did last week when I planned the same trip.

If making money online was as easy as a few tips, everyone would be doing it. Unless you consider just the old fashioned ways of making money that have moved online (selling on eBay, making stuff for Etsy, etc.) then the only real other way that doesn't involve selling something is to have a large and interested audience to which you can run advertising. But it takes a large number of people, at least 10,000 a day, to make it worthwhile. Building up that community is where the labor is.
Then again, there's always porn. Porn seems to make money.

Interesting...That looks like a very old 12A, early '70s at least. The Ro80 was indeed a very odd car and it's kind of a shame they've swapped the engine. It also sounds like those two blokes don't really know what they're talking about. High quality wiring? You mean exposed connections, no relay sockets, fuse boxes in the engine bay? That's my definition of something that would leave you on the side of the road. And an oil control ring squealing? In what reality does that happen? If the oil control ring was damaged then the car would smoke like a chimney. It's also kind of funny that they had to warm the car up so it would start easily...

Sorry, this message kind of got lost and I just saw it now. It's been a busy few weeks.
If you intend to remove the carpet in once piece then you must pull the dash. However since this is a huge pain in the ass, I have never done it just to remove the carpet. Cut a slit down the carpet under the dash where it humps over the transmission tunnel and then you can pull it out. When you put it back in, you can tuck the carpet back under the dash and no one is the wiser. Also use a little contact adhesive on the transmission tunnel.

Brother please! A man with as much talent and as many awesome projects as you, does not need to apologize to a scrub like myself. But I appreciate the gesture all the same and really it is no big deal as it is obvious you are a busy dude. The fact that we are lucky to have access to a brain like yours over this forum in my opinion is priceless. So without further adieu here are a few updates from your favourite Torontonian midget:
I was working on a write-up that I promised you guys months ago measuring the lux emitted from two different LED bulb replacements for my motorcycle signals. My concern is that they are obviously not as bright as conventional bulbs but I didn't have any way to obtain a qualitative measurement considering the light meter in my old Canon AE1 left me with inconclusive results via its antique analogue meter so I went and purchased a 200,000 LUX digital light meter off ebay for just over 10 bucks:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/200-000-Lux-Digital-LCD-backlight-Pocket-Light-Meter-Lux-FC-Measure-Tester?item=251109080870&cmd=ViewItem&_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D2%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D2084406605202034228#ht_4230wt_902
I hope to get a more accurate reading on the amount of luminous flux emitted from these white 45 and 90 SMD LED bulbs using this cheap ebay meter and then I want to compare the brightness of the white LEDs through amber signal lenses and then amber bulbs through the same signal lens.
Regarding my RX7, in honour of Aaron's RX-Tina, I am going to name my car Katrina because I got the car back when Hurricane Katrina hit and my basement flooded with the torrential rainfall we got at the same time as Katrina was beating on the Atlantic regions. The main reason (aside from a really nasty flood cleanup and subsequent insurance claim) the car has been neglected so long since is probably because I was dreading the carpet replacement with the dash removal and all, but with the guidance of all your ancient Mazda wisdom, I am going to rip that carpet out tonight. The last thing I did to the car before putting her in storage was a new stage 2 racing clutch and welding new floor panels to replace the old rusty ones. My plan is to clean up any remaining oxidation on the floor panels before POR15'ing the whole floor. I also have a seat mount that has to somehow be cut out because the bolt stud that holds the seat rail looks like it completely rotted out. I will take a pic and will need to illicit your gnarly and most anticipated opinion on what to do before hacking at it, most probably with a dremel cutting disc. But your work on youtube has really shed some light on fixing up these old birds so I am confident with your guidance I can do this! Especially the dry ice segment for removing the tar off the floorboards, priceless knowledge I tell ya, all thanks to you Aaron. Around the same time I put the car in storage, I was able to locate some mint stock seats and two new doors with power locks and windows, which got painted with the rest of the car before she went into storage. Its just too bad I didn't see the clip you made that converted manual windows to power windows before going through all the trouble, but I had already proceeded with getting the new doors mounted and painted them before I saw your clip on the power window mod using the manual window internals....brilliant dude!
So for a more complex and arduous method for adding power windows to your RX, see the following link:
http://wright-here.net/cars/rx7/mods/power_windows.html
Other than that....sorry for the freakin' novel here! Talk to you guys soon....hope you and our Australian syndicates are all well!
Peace out
Engin

It will be interesting to hear about your LEDs because this past weekend (at EVFest in Toronto) there was a vendor selling LED headlights. It appeared to be just a round board with about 75 LEDs on it. Needless to say, I was slightly skeptical...
I've had to fix the rotted seat mount issue in my RX-7 years ago. Mine was caused by the bolt snapping off upon removal, and then a very poor attempt at drilling and tapping out the hole. Of course the tap broke, so the only option left was to cut out part of the mount and weld in a new piece. Come to think of it, I believe that was my first sheet metal repair and it took an entire weekend.
The easiest way to add power windows to an SA/FB/FC is to just buy the power window regulators. They bolt right into the non-power doors. Then you can rig up your own switches and harness (that's what I did when I added power windows to Tina) or use the factory stuff (but the switches suck).

Well, that convinced me. Just seeing the images it's obvious they are quite equivalent to an incandescent. Guess I'll get a set for my bicycle next spring so I can replace the fog lights and thus run one less battery. Loosing a battery means that the space can now be used as storage (automatic water bottle).

Lots of pictures! A lot of the same crowd was there, as well as some new stuff. Seeing everyone's projects complete compared to last year was great. I was a bit disappointed that Tesla Motors ended up as a no-show. It was hard to judge attendance because the space was so large compared to previous years but as always there was a lot of interested in my old Insight. Partially because as a fluke it ended up in the center of the exhibit. Next year I'll know to bring a small BBQ and some real food because the on site restaurant at the Brickworks only serves organic hippie vegan stuff.

120 LED 3528 SMD 1156 BA15S Pure White Fog Head Light Lamp Bulb DC 12V
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130592729021&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:CA:1123
The second set I bought for $25 each which came out to a whopping $58 bucks after tax and shipping from Superbrightleds.com
1156 LED Bulb - Single Intensity 45 SMD LED Tower
http://www.superbrightleds.com/search/led-products/1156-cw45-t/
You can see the 45 SMD LED tower bulb is just over half the size of the 120 SMD LED tower bulb and at 10x the cost.
My light meter finally came in yesterday fresh off the boat from Hong Kong like a rub and tug worker in cheap heels.
It measures in both FC = Foot Canlde (From Wiki: The name "footcandle" conveys "the illuminance cast on a surface by a one-candel source one foot away" and LUX (also from Wiki: luminous flux or luminous power is the measure of the perceived power of light).
Here it is measuring the light from my desk lamp:
So my question is, how far away should I have the light meter? One foot away using FC measurement? or at multiple distances using LUX units? I am going to conduct the tests using my motorcycle signals which illuminate solid instead of blinking if I pull the bulb on the opposite side signal which should make capturing the peak luminosity easier than if the light was blinking. The readings will be taken in my garage which is pitch black with the door closed and I will be taking measurements of both the 45 and 120 LED SMD bulbs against the standard 12V automotive filament jobbies.
The last step after obtaining those readings is to maybe order an amber set considering my signal light lens covers are amber going back to what you said Aaron about the less light possibly travelling through a different coloured lenses and comparing the two results. But really, the very last step of the test will be to measure the voltage draw of all the bulbs to complete the full spectrum of data.
If I could please get your educated opinions on how far back I should have the light meter in order to determine what the optimum bulb for use as motorcycles signals (without impeding or limiting light output) would be. Optimum being most bang for your voltage buck at a reasonable cost.
That is all for now

The exact distance is probably not important since you are comparing to a traditional bulb of the same style. Get a fridge box or something, paint the inside black and then mount the test bulbs at one end. Mount the meter through the wall at the other end and then test each pair of LED/incandescent bulbs.
The one thing I wonder though is whether the meter is sensitive to spectrum. The LED bulbs have a far narrower spectrum than incandescent which could affect readings. It certainly changes how people see LED light.

Looks like you were right about the amber bulb emitting more light out of an amber lens than the white as well as the direction the light gets emitted that make the most difference in brightness.
I doubt a $14 light meter is going to even touch spectrum.

Did you by chance measure the current these draw? Also has anyone said how reliable they are? This would be a nice thing to use in the anchor lite on the top of my boat. would be nice to only have to climb up there once. And they aren't nearly as expensive as the "marine" options I have seen.

But what I mean, is the meter more sensitive to some part of the spectrum vs. others? It could skew your measurements. Since incandescents belt out most of the spectrum the meter could read that as brighter than the LED, even though it may not be.

This depresses me. The news in North America sucks in comparison. If that happened around here there would be so much widespread offense that the reporter would likely be fired. It's pathetic.

Personally I hate the LED worklights, as well as CFL work lights. They don't seem to have nearly the light output that incandescents do, probably due to a narrow spectrum and more directional light. Then again I'm kind of weird in that I can see a little into the IR (handy for testing TV remotes) and am unusually sensitive in the UV spectrum. Give me good old incandescent until someone builds a full spectrum CFL/LED.

I bought two 10W T8 LED tubes for the kitchen. Coming from China I didn't know what to expect. They turned out to be very good. The colour temperature is very white, not too warm and not too cool. They light up the whole kitchen better than the two 20W fluros that I had installed. They have an internal AC-DC switch-mode power supply that can operate from approximately 85VAC up to 250VAC. This means that if we have a brown-out (which we have), these lights will still produce full brightness down to 85VAC. I can't say the same for most CFLs, Fluro tubes and definitely not incandescents unless you have an off-grid backup supply.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/10W-T8-LED-Straight-Tube-Bulb-White-Light-Lamp-60CM-Bright-CE-ROHS-AC85V-250V-/280940645264?pt=AU_Lighting_Fans&hash=item41695e0b90
A working environment should have multiple light sources, period. Preferably each producing evenly dispersed light out of a wide area. If the light-source is up high then you can get away with the beam being more focused. Lightly coloured walls also help. I think this is all pretty obvious to us anyway.

Hi Juan,
I'm very happy with how it's coming along. I'm working on it almost every day. I'm developing it locally but I will synchronize it with the main server which is connected to the WWW when bugs are sorted out and major features are added. I can't wait to have visitors other than bots come to my website.
Here is the link again:
http://johnnysprojects.com/
It's not finished yet so there isn't much to do which is why I had the website link in my last post for only a few days - enough for some visitors to take a look.
The next website synchronization will have the projects section completed for the most part. Adding projects to the projects section is something that will take more time.

Aaron, have you ever fixed a broken hood release cable for a gen2 RX? Mine broke this weekend and the only posts I can find on RX7 Club pertain to the gen3 and advise to go through the driver side signal. Do you know if that fix would work for the Gen2? Let me know if you have any expertise in the matter please!!
Thanks

Been there, done that. You'll need to reach up through the front of the bumper and wrap your hand around the back side of the latch (the front will be blocked by plastic air diffusers, assuming they are still in place). Once you feel the mechanism, there is a lever along the bottom which if pushed towards the driver side will unlatch the hood. If you have large hands, you may need to borrow a small child or girl and instruct them on what to do. It's a bit of a pain but can be done. Most likely the cable itself has not broken, but the plastic retainer which holds it to the latch has and the cable has simply fallen out. If that is the case, you may also be able to push the cable back up into position while someone else pulls the hood release from inside the car.

It's looking quite good with all the nifty fading, but one thing I did notice is that the links at the top are activated by script, so search engines aren't going to be able to navigate and it's a bit confusing for the user when the cursor doesn't change into a hand.

Hi Aaron,
It's great to read your input on this.
When deciding how I would implement website navigation I knew that the route I have currently gone with would be unconventional and not as straight forward as hyperlinks for SEO. It instills a more unique and memorable user experience. Since a growing number of website these days are using Ajax for website navigation I researched into how feasible it would be to make SEO work properly on this approach. It turns out that it can be done but it just requires a little bit more work to set-up than an hyperlink based website. Google is working on creating Ajax crawlers. I believe they are/have creating/created Ajax crawlers to index Facebook comments.
Regarding the pointing finger cursor over the buttons, I have tested that the CSS to produce this cursor change works in the latest IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari web browsers so no problems there. I haven't made all buttons produce the pointy cursor on mouse-over yet.
P.S.
I forgot to mention that SEs can actually completely crawl my website as it stands through the hyperlink based sitemap that is shown at the bottom left-hand corner of the screen. This sitemap is dynamically created by a PHP script. As other parts of the website grow, the sitemap will also grow without my help.

Half the time, these newer websites where EVERYTHING is java and shockwave crap, most of the links don't work. One of the reasons I love Wikipedia. It hasn't changed, and hasn't had to change because it works so well.
People nag about Facebook changing, but once you actually see the little shortcuts they do that most normal people wouldn't think of, it makes it a lot easier to use, and you can use the keyboard more instead of relying on the mouse. After messing with Linux, I'm all for keyboard shortcuts.

You're preaching to the choir. So many websites are overloaded with "widgets" and things designed to give clueless web designers server side functionality on the client side, it's becoming a real problem. YouTube is unusable on single core PCs now if there are more than a few hundred comments. I struggle to see why comments need to be supplied by JavaScript.
I admit that I listen to a lot of Leo Laporte's podcasts, have for years. While not in it really for technical info it's interesting programming. But I dare you to visit Twit.TV with anything lower than a 4 core i7. It's so overloaded with "Web 2.0" that it takes 5 - 8 minutes to render on my old TC4200. I've since upgraded my laptop so it's not a big deal but it practically maxes out all 4 cores (i7) while it renders and the fan sure spins up.
I really can't comment on Facebook. I've only seen it a few times. But I hear you on keyboard shortcuts. Keyboard shortcuts are one of the reasons (one of the many reasons) I will never stop using Blackberry.

I honestly don't understand the Javascript comments. Maybe we're just old. I'm 21 in two weeks. I like the cheap Nokia Windows phone so far. Not many apps, but it has the essential ones.
